TOWSON, Md. – Hoping to rebound from its first loss of the season, the 10th-ranked Tiger women's lacrosse team will return to Johnny Unitas® Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. game against the University of Richmond.
It will be the 18th all-time meeting between the Tigers and the Spiders in a series that Richmond leads by a 9-8 margin. However, the Tigers have won the last three meetings against the Spiders.
Off to a 4-1 start, the Tigers dropped an 18-10 decision against eighth-ranked Syracuse on Wednesday afternoon. The loss snapped the Tigers' nine-game regular season win streak, dating back to last season.
Junior attacker Jess Dunn led the Tigers against Syracuse by scoring a career-high six goals on six shots while senior midfielder Hillary Fratzke added three goals for the 36th “hat trick” of her college career.
After scoring just seven goals in her first two years, Dunn leads the Tigers with 16 goals with one assist this year. She has converted 72.7 per cent of her shots this year, making 16 of 22 attempts. Fratzke, who is returning after a knee injury sidelined her for most of last year, has contributed 15 goals with two assists. She has also tallied a “hat trick” in four of the Tigers' five games this season.
Currently 3-5 on the season, the Spiders are coming off a 14-12 victory over Longwood on Tuesday afternoon. After opening the season with four straight losses against nationally-ranked opponents, the Spiders have won three of their last four games.
Freshman attacker Gabi Wiegand led the Spiders to the win over Longwood on Tuesday, scoring four goals with an assist. Senior goalkeeper Erica Marrocco made 11 saves for the Spiders, who outshot the Lancers by a 32-28 margin.
Wiegand is the Spiders' leading scorer with 18 goals and four assists while sophomore midfielder Mary Flowers has contributed a team-high 19 goals with two assists. Marrocco has posted a 15.14 goals against average for the Spiders, who will open a five-game homestand next Friday against Temple.
The Tigers used a season-high four goals and two assists from Britt Woodfield to edge the Spiders by a 17-9 margin in last year's meeting at Unitas Stadium. Woodfield was one of three Tigers to record a “hat trick” as Towson scored a season-high 17 goals in the victory.
After Saturday's game against the Spiders, the Tigers will be idle until Sunday, March 28 when they welcome ninth-ranked Stanford to Unitas Stadium for the first-ever meeting between the Cardinal and the Tigers. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
