TOWSON, Md. - When an earthquake hit the East Coast shortly before 2:00 on Tuesday afternoon, everyone was surprised.
But, Coach Rob Ambrose barely noticed. He quipped, "I thought all the noise was related to our players working out very hard in the weight room."
Less than two hours after the event, the Tigers returned to the practice field and held their 20th practice of the season - and it was earthquake-free.
With less than two weeks remaining before the season opener against Morgan State on Sept. 3, Quarterbacks Coach Jared Ambrose has been working with five different signal-callers.
"It has been going well," says Jared Ambrose, the Tigers' first-year Quarterbacks Coach. "After coaching the tight ends for the last two years, it has been a little bit of adjustment. But, I have been fortunate that I've had good relationships with all of them."
Veterans Brian Potts and Peter Athens are among the candidates for the starting quarterback position. A junior, Potts has seen action in ten career games and started twice. Athens started six games as a first-year freshman in 2009.
"Brian is one of the smartest quarterbacks I've ever worked with," says the Quarterbacks Coach. "Pete is a tremendous athlete who throws the ball with tremendous accuracy."
In addition to Potts and Athens, the Tigers have three newcomers competing for playing time.
Sophomore Grant Enders, a transfer from Lackawanna Junior College, is a product of Old Mill High School. After graduating from Old Mill, he attended Holy Cross. After one year at Holy Cross, he transferred to Lackawanna Junior College where he played very well.
"We recruited Grant Enders out of high school," recalls Jared Ambrose. "He went to Holy Cross and now he is back here so we got him on the rebound. He is a good all-around athlete who will do a good job for us."
The Tigers have a pair of first-year freshmen competing for playing time as well. Price Litton of Providence Day School in North Carolina and Connor Frazier of Damascus High School have both been impressive.
"They both have bright futures," says Ambrose. "But they are young and they are going to be learning a lot.
"We are fortunate that we have a couple of options," he added.
The Tigers return to practice on Wednesday morning.
