Ambrose Optimistic After Tigers' Final Scrimmage

TOWSON, Md. - In their final scrimmage before their season opener against Morgan State on Sept. 3, the Tigers avoided the rain and got in some excellent work, according to Coach Rob Ambrose.

"I was very pleased by what I saw," said Ambrose. "We've made a lot of progress the last few weeks. Our guys have been grinding and everyone is tired and beat up. They are looking forward to hitting somebody else for a change."

With three different quarterbacks directing the offense, the Tigers scored three touchdowns and ran 66 plays. Sophomore D.J. Soven also added a 40-yard field goal.

The scrimmage started off on a positive note as Derrick Joseph returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown.

"Our return game is much, much better," says Ambrose. "I was pleased to see Derrick break off a long return because that's what we have been scheming. The great thing is that we have tremendous depth among our return specialist. Adding Leon Kinnard to the roster has made us much better. Those two guys give us a lot of options."

A transfer from the University of Connecticut, Kinnard did a little of everything during the scrimmage. He had a 35-yard kickoff return, caught two passes for 19 yards.

On his first drive, sophomore quarterback Grant Enders directed a 48-yard touchdown drive. Enders connected with Gerrard Sheppard on a 21-yard pass play and completed a 17-yard pass to junior Tom Ryan. On third-and-goal from the three-yard line, Enders, a transfer from Lackawanna Junior College, scored a touchdown on a three-yard scramble.

Sophomore quarterback Peter Athens also directed a touchdown drive in the second quarter. Athens, who started six games as a first-year freshman in 2009, marched the Tigers 67 yards in 11 plays. On third-and-15, he completed a 22-yard screen pass to junior Tremayne Dameron, giving the Tigers a first down at the 50-yard line.

Faced with fourth down-and-one at the 41-yard line, sophomore Sterlin Phifer ran for six yards and a first down. When Athens completed a 20-yard pass to sophomore tight end James Oboh, the Tigers reached the one-yard line. Phifer, who ran for 42 yards on 10 carries, scored on a one-yard touchdown run to cap off the drive.

On the final drive of the scrimmage, Enders moved the Tigers to the 23-yard line where Soven ended the afternoon with a 40-yard field goal.

Athens and Enders have been competing at quarterback with junior Brian Potts for the starting job all during the pre-season.

In Thursday's scrimmage, Athens completed four of six passes for 56 yards while Enders was 10-for-16 for 99 yards and an interception. Potts completed three of seven passes for 35 yards.

"We need to decide on our starting quarterback," said Ambrose. "The competition has been very good but we need to decide. My brother (Jared Ambrose, Quarterbacks Coach) and I are going to sit down tonight and come out with a starter. I do know that we are going to have a legitimate situation where we have a '1A' and '1B' situation at quarterback this year. But, the sooner we decide, the more comfortable I will feel."

The Tigers also have a very competitive situation at the tailback but Coach Ambrose has already determined who will start.

"Tremayne Dameron has had a tremendous pre-season," he says. "He has earned the right to start. But, we are going to use a lot of backs this season.

"We are very happy with our depth back there," Ambrose added. "Depth breeds competition and competition breeds success."

Dameron, who has rushed for over 1,000 yards in his career, has played in all 22 games the last two years. In the scrimmage, he ran for 22 yards on four carries and he also caught a 22-yard pass.

A transfer from Boston College, Phifer was the leading rusher in the scrimmage with 42 yards on 10 carries. Newcomer Trea Jones, a transfer from Colorado, had one carry for five yards and caught a ten-yard pass while freshman Terrance West had only two carries for three yards.

No matter who is throwing the ball, junior wide receiver Tom Ryan catches it. Ryan was the leading receiver at the scrimmage with seven receptions for 67 yards. Kinnard had two catches for 19 yards.

Defensively, junior lineman Matt Morgan played well. He had two sacks in the scrimmage. Cornerback Manny Gbor also had the only interception of the scrimmage.

The Tigers return to practice on Friday afternoon.
