TOWSON, Md. - As we all know, the Tiger football team's season came to a close this past Saturday afternoon with its 40-38 playoff loss to Lehigh at Johnny Unitas® Stadium.
Even though there was sadness throughout the Towson community over the loss, Coach Rob Ambrose and his team have nothing to hang their heads over. This was a season that all of us will remember for a long, long time.
From a personal standpoint, I feel honored to have watched this team from the opening kick-off against Morgan State on September 3 to the final play this past Saturday. These three months have been as good as any for this broadcaster. As disappointed as we all are that the season is over, let's remember what our thoughts were going into the year.
This was a team being picked to finish last in the CAA. This was a team that had a quarterback who had never taken a snap for the Tigers. The offensive line consisted of four sophomores and last year's leading wide receiver was gone.
And, this was an offense that only averaged 15.5 points per game in 2010. There was NO indication that this group would end up as one of the best in the nation.
We watched one of the greatest freshman years in FCS history as Terrance West shattered the school record by scoring 29 touchdowns. And he did it without even playing in the first game against Morgan.
We watched Jordan Dangerfield emerge as one of the best safeties in the CAA. You could always tell when Jordan had made the tackle because the ball carrier looked like he had been shot the way he went down.
The memories we take from 2011 will last forever. 4th and 29 against Old Dominion. D.J. Soven kicking the game winner against Richmond. Winning the CAA championship outright on a brisk fall day against Rhode Island.
Let's also remember that this team beat Colgate for the first time in program history. The Tigers beat William and Mary for the first time in program history. They also defeated New Hampshire for the first time in program history.
So even though we are all a little down from the loss to Lehigh, just remember how sweet these last three months have been. Even 10 years from now, we will all still smile when we are reminded of the 2011 Tiger Football championship season.
A personal thank you to all of the players and coaches for their cooperation this football season.
We can now put our full attention to the Towson men and women's basketball seasons. Coach Pat Skerry has dealt with playing the 18th most difficult schedule in the nation and he is doing it with the youngest team in the land. Anyone who was at the Towson Center last Saturday night to watch the Tigers take on George Mason can see the progress this young squad is making.
With their next five games all in town, including four at the Towson Center and one at Coppin State, make sure you come out and root these young Tigers on as they finish up non-conference games. I have a feeling by the time CAA play starts, there will be several coaches around the CAA who won't be thrilled to see Towson on their schedule.
Then, there is Coach Joe Mathews' women's team. What a start for this club!! They have just two losses and they are both to top 15 programs in Maryland and Connecticut.
Coach Mathews led his team to a big win over James Madison this past Sunday as five Tigers reached double figures. Talk about a team effort. Under Coach Mathews, the Tigers have always been known for playing solid defense and this past Sunday was no different as they held the Dukes to just 31.9% shooting. They also outrebounded the previously undefeated Dukes by seven.
Programming Note: Damon Lewis and I will be at Bill Bateman's in Towson Thursday night for Tiger Talk from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. It's a full program, so come on out. We will wrap up the football season with Coach Ambrose and then, we'll talk hoops with both Coach Skerry and Coach Mathews. If you can't make it out to Bill Bateman's, you can tune into Tiger Talk on WNST-AM 1570 or right here on TowsonTigers.com.
