BALTIMORE, Md. - Following the Tigers' tough 12-6 loss against No. 2 Johns Hopkins on Friday night, TowsonTigers.com takes a look back at
some of the notes and highlights with "Inside the Box Score."
O From the D - It was an unlikely source that the Tigers got their first goal of the game
from on Friday night. Senior defenseman Sean Sheehe (pictured on right), who was making his second straight start, took the ball nearly the entire length of the field before uncorking a shot that snuck past Johns Hopkins goalkeeper Pierce Bassett less than a minute into the game.
It marked the first goal of Sheehe's career on just the second shot of his college career; he also had a shot against Hofstra as a sophomore.
Sheehe became the first Tiger defenseman or long-stick midfielder to score a goal since Alec Jernstedt tallied a goal against Drexel last year. Jernstedt led all Tiger defenders with three goals last season.
Don't Blink ... You Might Miss Something - Senior defenseman Sean Sheehe's goal came just 36 seconds into the game on Friday night, giving Towson a very quick 1-0 lead. It marked the first time that Towson has scored in the game's opening minute since Mar. 26, 2011 when Matt Hughes scored just 14 seconds into a game against Delaware.
Bookends - If you take away the second and third quarters from Friday night's game, you would notice that the Tigers and the Blue Jays played on pretty even terms.
In the first and fourth quarters, each team scored five goals. In addition, the Blue Jays held a slim 7-5 advantage in face-offs, but six of those wins came in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Jays also outshot Towson by a 21-11 margin in those two periods, but a large part of the JHU shots came in the fourth quarter as Hopkins fired 15 shots at the Tiger defense.
First Strike - For the second straight game, the Tigers scored the first goal and took the early 1-0 lead. Dating back to last season, the Tigers have scored the opening goal of the game four of the last five outings.
In 2011, the Tigers scored the game's first goal six times.
Another Night, Another Career High - For the second straight game, junior goalkeeper Andrew Wascavage made the start between the pipes. And, for the second straight game, he set a career high.
After making eight saves in the first start of his college career at Jacksonville, he tallied 11 saves against Johns Hopkins on Friday night. Wascavage tallied seven of those saves in the second half as the Blue Jays outshot Towson, 23-8, after the intermission.
Wascavage has posted a .463 save percentage in his first two games while allowing 11.00 goals per outing.
Marching Two by Two - Redshirt freshman midfielder Robby Zoppo recorded his second straight two-goal game against Johns Hopkins on Friday night. He scored with 11:43 left in the second quarter to give Towson a 3-2 lead before scoring the final goal of the game with 33 seconds left off an assist from senior attackman Sean Maguire.
Maguire and Zoppo are tied for the team lead with four goals through the first two games.
Over the Hill - The Tigers allowed 42 shots by the Blue Jays on Friday night, including 23 in the second half. It marked the first time since Apr. 24, 2010 against Penn State that a Towson opponent has fired at least 40 shots.
Of the 42 shots taken by the Blue Jays on Friday night, 23 of them were shots on goal.
Getting on the Board - After being limited without a point in the Tigers' season-opening win over Jacksonville last week, sophomore midfielder Andrew Hodgson tallied his first goal of the season on Friday night. With 10:27 left in the fourth quarter, he scored an unassisted marker to narrow the Towson deficit to 11-5.
A member of the CAA All-Rookie Team last year, Hodgson was the Tigers' third-leading scorer with 19 points; he had 7 goals with 12 assists as a freshman.
Start Me Up - Freshman defenseman Jojo Ostrander made the first start of his college career on Friday night. He is the fifth Tiger to make the first start of their career this season.
X Marks the Spot - After winning just 6 face-offs in 14 attempts last week in the victory over Jacksonville, junior midfielder Matt Thomas bounced back with a solid performance against Johns Hopkins on Friday night. The Monrovia, Md. native won 12 of 20 draws and had a team-high six ground balls.
In two games, Thomas has 18 of 34 face-offs (.529) and leads the team with 12 ground balls.
One and One - Senior attackman Sean Maguire and junior attackman Matt Hughes each scored a goal with an assist on Friday night against the Blue Jays. For both players, it marked the second straight game in which he has scored and recorded an assist.
Maguire is the Tigers' leading scorer with six points through the first two games while Hughes has two goals with two assists.
Pupil Meets Teacher - While Towson Coach Shawn Nadelen had faced his former coach before, he never went against Johns Hopkins Coach Dave Pietramala as a head coach until Friday night. Nadelen, a 2001 graduate of Johns Hopkins, played for Pietramala as a senior and was one of the Blue Jays' co-captains. He led the Blue Jays to the NCAA quarter-finals and earned second team All-America honors.
Blue Jay Bits - Johns Hopkins Coach Dave Pietramala earned the 150th win of his college career with the victory over Towson ... In addition, the Blue Jays defeated the Tigers for the 17th straight time ... Johns Hopkins now leads the all-time series by a 37-3 margin ... The Blue Jays' starting attack of Chris Boland, Zach Palmer and Brandon Benn accounted for nine goals and three assists ... Palmer now has five goals and six assists in two career games against Towson.
