TOWSON, Md. - The Towson women's tennis team opened up conference play as part of a doubleheader on Saturday at the Towson Center tennis Courts. After defeating local rival Coppin State by a score of 7-0 in their first match, the Tigers (5-3, 0-1 CAA) were defeated 4-3 in a close contest to Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel in the afternoon.
"As long as we give it our best effort, that's what I care about," Towson head coach Doug Neagle said. "I think we need to step it up, but I think the girls are stepping up to do it. It was a really good atmosphere today."
The Tigers were led by a pair of players who won both of their singles matches on the day in senior Andrea Samlin and freshman Lorena Ferrer.
Samlin defeated Coppin State's Ashley Milo 6-0 and 6-1 in her first match and then dropped Aysenil Orhon of Drexel by a score of 6-1 7-6 and 7-2 in the second set tie-breaker.
Ferrer defeated Miranda Taylor of Coppin State 6-0 and 6-2, then beat Drexel's Emma Brook 7-5, 6-4.
Samlin and Ferrer have a combined 17-10 record in singles play this season and are first and second, respectively, among the Tigers in singles victories.
Towson returns to its home courts Wednesday at 2 p.m. for a match against Morgan State.
