TOWSON, Md. – After a successful 2012-13 year, TowsonTigers.com will be looking back at the top 10 moments from the year as voted on by members of the athletics staff. However, before the 10-best list kicks off, here's a look at the five moments that finished just outside the top 10.
No. 15 – Gymnastics sends a pair of freshmen to the NCAA regional meet – Most freshman athletes enter their first collegiate season hoping to find some way to contribute to the team's success. Abby Griswold and Katie Sassa did that and more as they turned in strong freshman seasons and qualified for the NCAA Regional meet. Griswold competed in the all-around after earning a second team selection as an all-arounder on the All-East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) team. Sassa was a first team All-EAGL selection on vault.
No. 14 – Zach Stone breaks the school record in the 500-yard freestyle – Any athlete will tell you he wants to be the best in his sport. Swimmer Zach Stone can say after breaking a school record in the 500-yard free that had stood since 1983. Stone turned in the record-breaking performance during the preliminaries at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship meet.
No. 13 – Volleyball stretches win streak to 18 straight matches with victory over William & Mary – The Tiger volleyball team put together a special season in 2012 and a win over William & Mary in the regular season finale certainly proved that. The Tigers' 3-1 win over the Tribe on November 10 sent the senior players out on a high note as it was the team's 18th straight victory. The victory gave the team the second-longest win streak in school history and allowed the Tigers to wrap up the CAA schedule with a perfect 12-0 record.
No. 12 – Women's basketball pulls off an epic comeback over Northeastern – On Feb. 28, the Tigers found themselves down 53-27 to Northeastern with 10:37 to play in regulation. Towson used a 35-8 run to take a 62-61 lead with eight seconds to play. The Huskies tied the game at 62-62 and the two squads went to overtime. However, the Tigers would not be denied that night as Tanisha McTiller scored 32 of her career-high 36 points in the second half and overtime to lead the Tigers to the 73-69 victory.
No. 11 – The men's and women's basketball teams closed out the Towson Center with a pair of wins – March 2 marked the final basketball games to be played in the Towson Center as both teams are set to move into the Tiger Arena for the 2013-14 season. The men's team continued its spirited play and earned a 67-64 win over Hofstra to complete the biggest single-season turnaround in NCAA history. The women's team played the second game of the doubleheader and earned a 73-69 win over William & Mary with the final bucket scored in that game being Tanisha McTiller's 1,000th career point. Fan's choice – In voting done on TowsonTigers.com last week, fans chose the baseball team going 4-0 to win the CAA Championship as their top moment from the 2012-13 year. The Tigers upset the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the league to win their first CAA title. (Game recaps – Northeastern win, UNC Wilmington win, William & Mary win, William & Mary win for title).
