Game Notes

Towson

RENEWING AN OLD ACQUAINTANCE: Buffalo and Towson are renewing an old acquaintance from their days as members of the East Coast Conference. The Tigers and Bulls have a history that dates back to 1991-92 when the two schools met three times. Towson won all three games including a 122-58 East Coast Conference first round tournament victory that still stands as the Tigers' single game scoring record. Buffalo was 2-26 that year. The Bulls have certainly turned their program completely around. Last year they were an impressive 21-12, tying Bowling Green for first place in the MAC East Division. The Tigers are now 4-3 all-time against MAC opponents.

A 2-0 START: The Tigers are going after just their third 2-0 start in the last 20 years. Four years ago Towson downed Hartford and Samford for its first 2-0 getaway in 17 seasons. Towson has won its last four season openers but then the Tigers have stumbled twice in the last two years.

NEW LEADER: Senior forward Calvin Lee is the early leader for the Tigers after his career high 25 points and 4 blocks led Towson to an 82-71 win over Miami (Ohio) in the season opener. Calvin was 10 of 16 from the field and 5 of 7 on the free throw line. He converted all 4 of his 3-point play opportunities which accounted for 12 of his points. Calvin's previous career high was 13 points twice last year.

WHAT A TIP OFF: Towson tipped off its 31st season of Division I basketball with an impressive 82-71 win over visiting Miami (Ohio) out of the Mid-American Conference. Calvin Lee was the only Towson player in double figures his game high 25 points. All  nine Towson players who saw action in the game played at least 14 minutes and scored at least 4 points. Point guards Brian Morris and Troy Franklin combined for 15 assists with just 3 turnovers. The RedHawks shot 55% in the first half to take a 42-37 lead into halftime but Towson cooled them off to 39% shooting (9-23) in the second period when the Tigers outscored them 45-29. The Tigers shot 52.6% for the game. Junior forward Robert Nwankwo recorded a team highs with 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Towson finished with 10 team steals that helped force 20 RedHawks' turnovers.

MILESTONE FOR KENNEDY: The 82-71 win over Miami (Ohio) was the 475th of Pat Kennedy's coaching career. Now in his 30th year as a Division I head coach, Pat leads all CAA coaches in career victories.

UPDATING THE BULLS: Buffalo is predicted to finish third in the MAC East Division behind Akron and Kent State. The Bulls return 11 players, including 4 starters to a team that advanced to the 2009 MAC Tournament Championship game. Buffalo enters today's game with a 1-1 record. After opening with a 58-57 loss to visiting Vermont the Bulls rebounded for a 63-53 victory at Navy that ended a 9-game win streak the Mids had against non-conference visitors in Alumni Hall. Senior shooting guard Rodney Pierce, who was named to the All-MAC Preseason Team after earning First Team All-Conference honors last year, is a leader in the backcourt. He is the only Bull averaging over 30 minutes per game. Sophomore forward Mitchell Watt is the early scoring leader, averaging 11.0 after the first two games (13 at Navy). He's shooting at a .667 per centage on the floor and at the free throw line. Senior guard/forward Calvin Betts has been all over the boards, averaging a team high 7.5 rebounds per game.Sophomore forward Titus Robinson is a big help off the glass with his 6.0 rebounding clip.
