PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Junior forward Jerrelle Benimon scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds as the Tigers won their third straight game, a 69-66 victory over Colonial Athletic Association preseason favorite Drexel on Saturday afternoon.

The win snapped Drexel’s 17-game regular-season CAA win streak, which was just one shy of the league record, set by George Mason. It was also Towson's first win at the Daskalakis Center in 10 years. Towson's last victory at Drexel was an 81-65 victory over the Dragons on Feb. 23, 2002.

Towson (7-8, 2-0 CAA) also won its third consecutive road game, marking the first time that the Tigers have won three straight games that were all played on the road since Feb. 20-27, 1993 when they won games at UNC Asheville, Radford and UMBC.

The victory also enabled Towson to open its CAA schedule with a 2-0 record for the first time ever. The Tigers last opened a league campaign with two straight wins during their last year in the America East in 2000-01.

Towson, which led for most of the game, owned a 32-18 lead at halftime after holding the Dragons to just 28 percent shooting in the opening period. The Tigers scored the final 11 points of the half to build their 14-point advantage at the intermission.

Drexel trailed by 17 (49-32) with 8:49 remaining before going on a 34-20 run to cut its deficit to 69-66 with 14 seconds left. After the Tigers turned it over with seven seconds on the clock, CAA Preseason Player of the Year Frantz Massenat had a pair of chances to force overtime, but neither three-point attempt fell.

Benimon, the current CAA Player of the Week, posted his ninth double-double while dishing out a team-high four assists and blocking a game-high three shots.

Junior Marcus Damas added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers while classmate Mike Burwell scored 12 points and hit two clutch free throws with 21.7 seconds left in a one-possession game.

Freshman Jerome Hairston tallied nine of his 12 points during Towson's big first half. Graduate student Bilal Dixon posted six points on 3-for-3 shooting to go along with seven rebounds.

Massenat led Drexel, which fell to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in league play, with 17 points. Derrick Thomas chipped in 15 points for the Dragons in the loss.

Towson controlled the paint, holding a 39-33 rebounding edge and a 26-10 advantage in points in the paint.

The Tigers return home on Wednesday to take on William & Mary at the Towson Center.
