Tigers Fall to Sam Houston in Etech Classic

NACOGDOCHES, Texas. – Sam Houston State shot 50 percent from the field in the second half to build a big lead before hanging on for a 67-55 victory over Towson in the final game of the Lumberjack Etech Classic on Saturday evening.

With the loss, the Tigers fall to 6-4 on the year and 0-4 away from home. The Bearkats improve to 7-3.

Senior Rafriel Guthrie led three Tigers in double figures with 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting off the bench. Classmate Jerrelle Benimon posted 13 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Four McGlynn tallied 10 points, including two three-pointers.

Towson was hurt by 10-for-23 shooting from the free throw line (43.5%) and 15 turnovers that led to 20 Bearkats points.

Sophomore Timajh Parker-Rivera scored the first points of the game for the Tigers with a traditional three-point play at the 18:43 mark of the first half. That bucket and ensuing free throw gave Towson its only lead of the game at 3-1. Sam Houston scored 18 of the next 24 points to take a 19-9 lead midway through the half.

The Bearkats increased their lead to 12 points (28-16) at the 5:21 mark, but the Tigers closed the half on a 9-4 run to go into the intermission trailing 32-25.

Sam Houston State wasted little time taking control of the game in the second half. The Bearkats scored the first 10 points of the stanza to take a 42-25 lead before freshman John Davis netted Towson’s first points of the half with a lay-in at the 14:30 mark.

Sam Houston State would lead by as many as 23 points in the second half.

Davis was once again a bright spot for the Tigers off the bench, recording seven points and eight rebounds in just 11 minutes. Parker-Rivera posted a career-high four blocks in the loss.

The Bearkats were led by Terrance Motley’s 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting.

Towson returns home on Tuesday to take on Central Penn. Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m. from SECU Arena, where the Tigers are 6-0 this season and riding a 10-game home winning streak.
