Tigers Race Past Charleston For Fifth Straight Win

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Towson senior Jerrelle Benimon recorded his ninth straight double-double and posted his sixth straight game with 20 or more points as the Tigers cruised past College of Charleston, 72-57, for their fifth straight win on Sunday at TD Arena.

Towson (12-6, 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association), which is riding its longest winning streak since the 2000-01 season, has won three straight games on the road and is 3-0 in league play for the second straight year.

Benimon finished with a game-high 21 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Senior Mike Burwell posted 18 points, his second best scoring effort of the year. The guard shot 8-for-13 from the floor and had three assists with no turnovers.

Senior Rafriel Guthrie chipped in 14 points and sophomore Four McGlynn added 11 as Towson had four players score in double figures for the 10th time this season.

Towson used a 14-4 run to take a 31-25 lead late in the first half. Consecutive three’s from Benimon and McGlynn capped the spurt to give the Tigers their largest advantage of the period. Charleston netted the final four points of the half to go into the intermission trailing just 31-29.

Leading 48-41 midway through the second half, Burwell scored seven straight points during a 9-0 Towson run that gave the Tigers a 57-41 lead with 5:16 remaining. Charleston was unable to cut their deficit to single digits the rest of the way as Towson led by as many as 18 in the second half.

Senior Willis Hall led Charleston (10-9, 2-2 CAA) with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

The Tigers held the Cougars to 29.4 percent shooting in the second half and just 33.3 percent shooting for the game. Towson had a season-low five turnovers while shooting 42.9 percent from the floor and making six of 12 from beyond the arc.

Towson returns to SECU Arena on Wednesday to face Northeastern at 7 p.m. The Tigers have won 13 straight home games, the 12th longest current home court winning streak in the country.

GAME NOTES: Towson has won 11 of its last 12 CAA games…The Tigers own their best record after 18 games since also starting the 1995-96 season 12-6…Towson has reached the 12-win plateau at its earliest point in a season since 1977-78…The Tigers tie the all-time series with Charleston at 2-2.
