TOWSON, Md. -- Despite senior Jerrelle Benimon posting his NCAA-leading 16th double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds, the Towson men’s basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snap with a 66-53 loss at UNC Wilmington on Monday night inside Trask Coliseum. The Seahawks tied a school record by committing only one turnover in the game.

The loss drops Towson to 16-9 overall and 7-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The Tigers are now tied with William & Mary for second-place in the league standings. Towson will travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on the Tribe on Saturday.

Senior Marcus Damas recorded his second double-double of the season and third of his career with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but no other Tiger scored more than eight points. Towson shot just 34.5 percent from the floor and made just three of 20 shots from beyond the arc.

The Tigers scored six of the game’s first nine points to take an early three-point lead before UNCW went on a 9-0 run and never trailed again. A three-pointer by Seahawk guard Addison Spruill gave the home team its biggest lead of the half at 21-14 with 7:52 remaining.

Towson got to within 26-24 on a Damas drive and score with 2:01 left in the stanza, but a Freddie Jackson fastbreak lay-in just before halftime gave UNCW a 30-25 lead at the intermission.

The Seahawks started the second half on a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 39-27 less than three minutes into the period. Trailing 49-37, Towson began to inch back into the game. The Tigers scored five straight points, with three coming from Benimon at the free throw line, to cut the Seahawk lead to 49-42 with eight minutes remaining.

With Towson still trailing by single digits (54-46) with 4:17 left, UNCW put the game away by going on a 12-2 run. Tanner Milson capped the spurt with a three-pointer that gave the Seahawks a 66-48 lead with just 1:06 remaining. Sophomore Four McGlynn hit his only three-pointer in six attempts with 48 seconds left and freshman John Davis, who returned from an 11-game absence due to an illness, added a late bucket to close the final gap.

Senior Chris Dixon and sophomore Dylan Sherwood led the Seahawks (7-19, 1-10 CAA) with 14 points apiece.

Sophomore Timajh Parker-Rivera scored seven points on 3-for-3 shooting with 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Tigers. Towson owned a 50-31 rebounding advantage, but made zero steals as UNCW had 13 assists to just one turnover.

The Towson-William & Mary game is set to tip at 4 p.m. on Saturday and can be seen on Comcast SportsNet.
