CLEVELAND, Ohio – Senior linebacker John Webb (Winslow Township H.S./Sicklerville, N.J.) of Towson University has been named to the tenth annual Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Athletic Directors Association Academic All-Star team.
A Biology major with a 3.31 Grade Point Average, Webb is one of 51 scholar-athletes named to the Academic All-Star team.
Football players from all Football Championship Subdivision institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the nominees was required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He must have reached his second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. He must also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his designated position.
Webb, a four-year starter on the Tiger defense, was one of the Tigers’ co-captains as a senior. A 6-3, 220-pound outside linebacker, he was named as third team all-conference as a junior.
As a senior, he started all 11 games for the Tigers and was one of the top performers on a Tiger defense that ranked second in the Colonial Athletic Association, allowing 22.0 points per game.
With 85 tackles in 11 games, Webb ranked third on the team. He was also tied for 22nd in the CAA tackles. In addition to making 85 tackles, Webb had 5.5 tackles for lost yardage and made 2.5 quarterback sacks. He also forced a fumble.
A starter in 38 of 43 career games, Webb finished his career with 308 tackles, fourth on Towson’s all-time list. He made 30 tackles for lost yardage and had 14 sacks.
As a junior, he made 59 tackles in 11 games. Webb, who started the final 38 games of his career, made 95 tackles as a freshman, second on the team.
A Dean’s List student at Towson University, he was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ® District 2 team as a junior. A semi-finalist for the Draddy Award, he was honored as the winner of Towson University’s prestigious Doc Minnegan Scholarship in October, presented to the University’s most outstanding Scholar-Athlete.
As a junior, he was the winner of the Joseph McMullen Scholarship. A three-time member of the Atlantic 10 Football Academic All-Conference team, he was named as a First Team Sports Scholar for 2006 by Diverse Issues in Higher Education.
“I can’t say enough good things about John Webb,” says Tiger Coach Gordy Combs. “Every coach should have the chance to work with someone like John. He has made a tremendous impact on our football program - on and off the field. John epitomizes the term ‘Scholar-Athlete.’ He is a great football player but he’s an even better person. He has always represented the University, our football program and his family in a positive way. Next year, he will be attending medical school and I’m sure he will excel at that too.”
Webb is the seventh Tiger football player to earn a spot on the FCS All-Academic team. Previously, wide receiver Eric Yancey (2006), offensive center Kevin Mager (2003), defensive back P.D. Moore (2003), fullback Gene Liebel (2000-2001), wide receiver Adam Overbey (2000) and defensive end John Devoti (2000) were honored by the FCSADA.
Webb is one of five CAA football players who were named to the FCSADA Academic All-Star team.
