Tigers to Face Cornell in NCAA Tournament on Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ? After winning the Colonial Athletic Association regular season championship, the Towson University men's lacrosse team has been selected to play in the 2007 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championships and will play at fourth-seeded Cornell University in the first round, it has been announced by the NCAA Tournament committee.

 

The game will be played on Saturday, May 12 at 2:30 p.m. at Schoelkopf Field. Tickets are 10 dollars for adults and eight dollars for senior citizens in addition to college and high school students with the presentation of a valid identification card. Tickets for children ages 12 and under cost five dollars each.  

 

The Tigers, who will be making their 10th NCAA Tournament appearance, received an at-large bid after dropping a 10-7 decision to the University of Delaware in the CAA Championship Game on Saturday night. “The players have worked really hard all season and they deserve to play in the NCAA Tournament, especially the seniors,” Towson Coach Tony Seaman said. “We are excited about returning to the tournament and look forward to playing this weekend.”

 

Led by senior attackman Bobby Griebe (Boy's Latin School/Bel Air, Md.), the Tigers will be playing in their fourth NCAA Tournament in the last five years. Griebe has scored 23 goals with 20 assists this season, which ranks second in the CAA. Junior Jonathan Engelke (Farmingdale H.S./Massapequa, N.Y.) leads the Tigers with 24 goals along with eight assists.

 

Ranked first in the USILA Coaches Poll, the Big Red finished the regular season with a perfect 13-0 record after defeating Hobart by a 17-4 margin on Friday evening. Senior attackman Eric Pittard (The Hotchkiss School/Skaneateles, N.Y.) leads Cornell with 28 goals and 22 assists while senior goalkeeper Matt McMonagle (Episcopal Academy/Bryn Mawr, Pa.) has allowed 6.45 goals per game while stopping 62.4 per cent of the shots he has faced.

 

Towson is making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since the 2005 season when the Tigers lost to the Big Red in the first round by a 12-11 margin at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium. Senior midfielder Brian Clayton (Suffern H.S./Monsey, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal with 11 seconds left in the fourth quarter for Cornell. It will be the second all-time meeting between the Tigers and the Big Red.

 

The Tigers have played in 16 NCAA Tournament games in their Division I history with a 7-9 all-time record.

 

The first round games will be played at campus sites while the quarter-finals will be played at Princeton on May 19 and at Navy on May 20. The semi-finals and championship game will be played during Memorial Day Weekend at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
