TOWSON, Md. ? Senior forward Sebastian Haensel (Leipzig, Germany) and senior defender Nigel Marples (North Delta H.S./Delta, British Columbia, Canada) of Towson University have been named to the NSCAA/adidas College Scholar All-America team, it has been announced by National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
A two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association first team selection, Haensel was
named to the first team. He is a Business Administration major with a 3.34 cumulative grade point average. A first team All-CAA defender, Marples was named to the second team. He is a Chemistry major with a 3.75 G.P.A.
The NSCAA/adidas College Scholar All-America team is comprised of the 34 top scholar-athletes in college soccer and includes players from NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III as well as the NAIA. Of the 34 players honored, only Towson, Saint Louis, Southern Methodist and Lock Haven had two selections.
Towson and Saint Louis were the only schools with a player on the first team and a player on the second team.
Haensel and Marples led the Tigers to the best season in school history as Towson posted a final record of 15-2-3. Ranked 15th in the final NSCAA poll, the Tigers won the CAA regular season championship with a 10-0-1 record. The Tigers were seeded 15th in the NCAA College Cup and reached the third round where they lost to second-seeded Wake Forest, 2-1.
The Tigers' leading scorer with seven goals and eight assists, Haensel was named first team All-South Atlantic region. He was also honored as a third team NSCAA All-American. Haensel ended his career with 23 goals and 18 assists, tied for tenth on Towson's career scoring list with 64 points.
Marples, who was also named first team All-South Atlantic region, was a key defender for a Tiger defense that ranked eighth in NCAA Division I with a 0.62 Goals Against Average. A four-year starter and two-year captain, he helped the Tigers set a school record with 11 shutouts this season.
