RICHMOND, Va. – Junior swimmer Meredith Budner and sophomore diver Caroline Baker of the Tiger women's swimming and diving team have been named as the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, for the week ending January 10, it has been announced by CAA officials.
It is the third time this season Budner has been honored by the CAA. Meanwhile, it is the first weekly honor of Baker's career.
“I am very proud to have both Caroline and Meredith receive these awards,” Towson Coach Pat Mead said. “Caroline has been working so hard and I am so happy for her to reap the rewards of her dedication and hard work.
“Meredith's consistency this year is remarkable,” Coach Mead added. “With only six weeks left in the season, I am excited to see what she will be able to do at the CAA Championships.”
Baker had a record-setting performance in the Tigers' 176-124 CAA victory over Delaware on Saturday afternoon. She set the school record in the one-meter and three-meter events while qualifying for the NCAA Zone regional meet in each event.
Baker scored 295.42 points in the three-meter event after posting a score of 303.97 points in the one-meter event. She broke the school records previously held by Kasey Stroup.
Baker is the second CAA diver to score 300 or more points in an event this season. George Mason sophomore Kristen Meier recorded a CAA-best 315.22 points in the one-meter event earlier this year and leads the CAA with a score of 312.45 points in the three-meter event.
Budner won a pair of individual events and was a member of the Tigers' victorious 400-yard freestyle relay during the Tigers' win over the Blue Hens. She won the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:06.42 before posting a victory in the 100-yard freestyle, completing the event in 51.76 seconds.
Budner swam the anchor leg in the Tigers' 400-yard freestyle relay, which finished first with a time of 3:33.17.
Off to a 9-1 dual meet start, the Tigers will host the Patriots on Saturday afternoon at Burdick Pool at 1 p.m. It will be the Tigers' first home meet of the season.
