GREENVILLE, N.C. - Katie Lingmai allowed just one unearned run in her first career start to lead the Tigers past Morehead State by a 4-1 score on Friday morning at the Pirate Classic hosted by East Carolina. Towson (2-1) got a two-run double from Stef Streets at the plate.
The Tigers struck first in the contest as Kim Lempa drew a walk leading off the game and stole second. After the Eagles got the first two outs of the inning, Mindy Bean worked a walk to put two runners on base. Streets followed Bean's free base with a double to right field scoring both runners.
Morehead State would get its only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Bianca Cardenas was hit by a pitch leading off the frame and moved to second on an illegal pitch. Cardenas would advance to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch with two outs.
The Tigers got that run back in the top of the fourth as Rachel Miller worked a one-out walk. She would come around to score on Andrea Stevenson's two-out single. Towson would tack on one more run in the sixth. Miller worked her third walk of the game. She was sacrificed to second and reached third on an error with Stevenson at the plate. Miller would cross the plate on Mindy Bean's single.
Lingmai tossed the complete game and allowed just the one unearned run on five hits. She would also add five strikeouts in her Tiger debut. Alex Gjevre took the loss for Morehead State as she allowed all four runs in 5.1 innings of work.
Bean and Streets both recorded two hits in the contest to lead the Tigers. Bean would add one run scored and one RBI while Streets had two RBIs. Miller tied the school record for walks in a single-game with three and also scored twice.
Sam Woodall was the only Eagle to record more than one hit against Lingmai while Courtney Seiler worked three walks.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, February 27 as day two of the Pirate Classic takes place. Towson will face Penn State at 10:00 a.m. and East Carolina at 2 p.m.
