Tigers Fall in Both Games On Day Two of Pirate Classic

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Tigers dropped a pair of games on day two of the Pirate Classic hosted by East Carolina. Penn State defeated the Tigers by a 10-1 score in five innings in the first game. The Tigers (2-3) then dropped a tough 2-0 decision to the host, Pirates.

"Unfortunately we just could not get the bats going today," said Coach Lisa Costello. "I thought Katie Lingmai did a really nice job for us for the second day in a row pitching and we did a nice job defensively but the not having the bats just hurt us today."

Against the Nittany Lions, the Tigers found themselves in an early hole as Penn State took a 5-0 lead before the Tigers came to bat. The big blows in the first inning came off two-run RBI doubles from Desi Giordano and Lisa Akamine. Penn State would tack on two more runs in the second inning, off an RBI single from Jackie Hill.

The Nittany Lions would add two more runs in the third and a single run in the fourth for the 10-0 advantage.

The Tigers finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth as Lindsey Kent worked a one-out walk and Stevie Patnode went in to run for Kent. Jillian Donnelly followed with an RBI double to right center for the first hit of her career and first RBI. That was all the Tigers would be able to get though.

Shannon Johnston took the loss for the Tigers as she allowed seven runs on six hits in two innings of work. Britney Croner replaced Johnston in the circle and allowed three runs in her three innings of work. Akamine got the win for the Nittany Lions as she allowed just one run on two hits in three innings of relief work.

Against East Carolina, the game remained scoreless until the Pirates came to bat in the bottom of the third. Christina Merrida doubled to left center with one out, getting one of four hits Lingmai would allow all day. Merrida stole third and on the throwing error was able to cross the plate.

East Carolina added to its lead in the fifth as Charina Sumner worked a two-out walk. Sumner then stole second and third before scoring on Merrida's single to center.

Toni Paisley earned the win in the circle for the Pirates. She allowed just two hits and struck out 13 en route to the complete game. Lingmai suffered the loss after allowing two runs, one of which was earned in six innings on four hits.

Merrida was the only player to tally more than one hit off of Lingmai and also added a run scored and an RBI. Stef Streets and Rachel Miller recorded the only two hits for the Tigers.

Towson wraps up the Pirate Classic on Sunday, February 28 at 1 p.m. The Tigers will get an early look at CAA rival Delaware in that contest.
