COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Towson won the battle of the Tigers on Sunday with a 9-3 victory over Princeton on the final day of the Maryland Round Robin Tournament. The Tigers (6-3) won their third straight behind three RBIs from Courtney Wittner and a season-high nine runs scored.
"I thought we did a nice job with the bats today," said Coach Lisa Costello. "Even some of our outs were balls that were hit pretty hard and its coming along each day. I also thought Shannon Johnston did a nice job in the circle."
For the fifth time in the first nine games, the Towson found a way to get on the scoreboard in the first inning. Wittner had a two-out RBI single that scored a pair. Princeton answered the Tigers in the bottom half of the inning as Kelsey Quist had a two-run RBI double to left center. The two teams were knotted at 2-2 after one.
Towson would add two more in the top of the second. Erika Stasch worked a walk leading off the frame and scored on Andrea Stevenson's double. Stevenson would cross the plate one batter later as Kim Lempa reached on an error.
Princeton got one of those runs back in the bottom of the second.
Towson's offense wasn't done yet as Wittner came through with an RBI double in the top of the third.
Towson's big offensive inning game in the top of the fourth as the team put four runs on the board. The big blow in the inning came on Lindsey Kent's two-run RBI double. Also in that inning Sammi DiPompo had an RBI single for the Tigers.
Johnston set Princeton down the rest of the way, allowing just three base runners through the final four innings of play.
Johnston improves to 2-1 on the year with her complete game effort. She allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out four. Liza Kuhn took the loss after allowing five runs in three innings. Jamie Lettire allowed four runs in four innings of relief action.
Wittner and Stef Streets each finished with two hits in the game for Towson. Wittner added three RBIs while Streets had three runs scored. Lempa and Kent would also add two RBIs in the game while DiPompo finished with two runs scored and an RBI. Quist had two RBIs for Princeton while Lettire and Nicole Ontiveros each had two hits.
Towson looks to get its home schedule underway by hosting a doubleheader with Seton Hall on Wednesday, March 10 at 2 p.m.
