CONWAY, S.C. - Towson's first action of the outdoor season produced a couple of school records and a host of personal bests as the Tigers competed in the Coastal Carolina Invitational over the weekend.
Junior Ashley Adams showed the way with Towson's lone first place finish of the meet. She captured the 100 meter hurdles in 14.27, the third fastest time in program history. She ran a 25.40 in the 200 meter dash for the fifth fastest clocking at Towson. Later on she ran the opening leg in the 4x100 relay, joining senior Jill Meshey, senior Vivian Nwachukwu and junior Tara Okusaga to set a new school record with a time of 47.32.
Sophomore Shannel Shivers rewrote the school record in the hammer throw with an effort of 161'6" to place fourth in the meet. Shivers' record surpasses the old mark of 152' set by Elisa Jones in 1999. Shivers also placed fourth in the shot put with a personal best 40'11.75".
Junior Brandi Gervais continued her assault on the 5000 meter run. Her 17:53.67 placed her second at the meet and moves her into second on Towson's all-time list. She is one of just two runners in program history to run a sub 18-minute race, indoors or outdoors. Sophomore Katie Ogden came within less than a tick of joining Gervais in that select group as she posted a personal best 18:00.78 that moves her into third on the Towson list.
Sophomore Kaylin Gilmartin-Donohue placed second at the meet in the 1500 meter run with a program third best 4:41.04. Senior Megan DiGregorio moved up to second on Towson's 3000 steeplechase list with her runner up clocking of 11:26.91. Junior Mary Tuttle, running her first outdoor race for the Tigers, posted the sixth fastest 10,000 meter run time for the Tigers with a 38:51.
Meshey, the school record holder in the 400 meter dash, placed third in the meet in a time of 56.94. Nwachukwu moved into fourth with a personal best 12.28 in the 100 meter dash. Senior Amy Lauenstein moved up to fifth on the all-time javelin list with her throw of 114'7". Senior Alana Nedd now ranks eighth on the javelin list following her effort of 112'.
Towson is back in action this coming Saturday when the Tigers travel to Williamsburg, Va., for the Tribe Open.
