Tigers Defeat Winston Salem State, 9-1

ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Tigers extended their win streak to nine games with a 9-1 win over Winston Salem State in five innings on Sunday afternoon at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational. Towson (11-3) had its first game of the day against Hartford rained out.

"I'm happy with the way we hit the ball again today," said Coach Lisa Costello. "I thought it took us a little while to get the bats going this season but we certainly have shown what we are able to do in the past two days."

The Tigers struck first with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Stef Streets had a two-out RBI-double to score Rachel Miller who reached on a fielders' choice. Erika Stasch would add an RBI single in the frame before Brianna Jones ripped a bases loaded double to center field to score all three runners.

Towson added to its lead in the bottom of the second as Sammi DiPompo delivered a home run to left center.

The Rams got a run in the top of the fourth as Britney Cato led off with a home run against Shannon Johnston, who had entered the game in relief.

Towson scored its final three runs in the bottom of the fifth. DiPompo led off with a double and Streets followed with a walk. Jillian Donnelly had an RBI single to plate DiPompo and an error by the Rams' left fielder allowed Streets to cross the plate. With one out, Lindsey Kent singled to score Donnelly and the game was called due to the eight-run rule.

Britney Croner earned her second win of the year after throwing the first three innings in the circle. She allowed two hits and struck out three. Johnston allowed the one run in her two innings of relief work. Tiffany Burgess took the loss for Winston-Salem State after allowing five runs in 0.2 innings. Brittany Lane allowed four runs in 3.2 innings of relief work.

Seven different Tigers recorded at least one hit in the game. DiPompo, Donnelly and Kent all had two hits apiece while Stevie Patnode recorded her first career hit. DiPompo, Donnelly and Streets all recorded two runs scored in the game. Jones was the only Tiger with multiple RBIs as she finished with three.

Cato had a hit with a run scored and an RBI for the Rams.

Towson puts its win streak on the line on Wednesday, March 17. The Tigers will visit Bethune-Cookman for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
