Tigers Split a Doubleheader at Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Tigers split a doubleheader at Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers (12-4) won game one 3-2 and tied the school record for the longest win streak in a season at ten games.

The Wildcats would use four runs in the bottom of the seventh in game-two to tie it up and eventually won the game on a run in the ninth.

"I was happy to see us get the win in the first put am disappointed that we couldn't keep the momentum going in game-two," said Coach Lisa Costello.

In the first game, it was the Tigers jumping out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Sammi DiPompo drew a one-out walk and stole second. Mindy Bean delivered a single to score DiPompo with the first run of the game. Bean advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Stef Streets' single.

Bethune-Cookman tied the game in the bottom of the second. Joanna Hernandez scored the first run as the Tigers had a throwing error while attempting to pick-off the Wildcat runner. Aurelia Gamch had an RBI groundout in the inning to score the second run.

The game would remain knotted at 2-2 until the top of the seventh inning. Bean reached on an error by the third baseman leading off the frame. Erika Stasch had a two-out RBI single to right field to score Bean.

Dominique Ortega earned the win in relief for the Tigers. She allowed just three hits and struck out three in 5.2 innings of work. Allison Garcia surrendered the run in the seventh for Bethune-Cookman.

Stasch had a career-high four hits in the game and drove in a run. Bean had one hit, two runs scored and an RBI. Michelle Banuelos-Smith finished with two hits for the Wildcats.

In game-two it was once again the Tigers getting on the board early. Stasch led off the game with a single and Rachel Miller reached on an error to put two runners on. DiPompo then came through with an RBI-single to right field to score both runners. Streets would follow with a single to score DiPompo. The final run in the frame came on Joyce Delp's single that allowed Streets to score.

The Tigers led 4-0 until Bethune-Cookman came to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Britney Croner entered the game to relieve Shannon Johnston. Croner surrendered a walk and a single to the first two batters she faced. After getting the first out on a strikeout, a wild pitch allowed the runners to each advance a base. Briana Leverett walked to load the bases with one out for the Wildcats. Ashton Hinds was hit by the pitch to force in the first run of the inning. Johnston then re-entered the game to replace Croner in the circle. Gamch worked a walk to force in the second run and reload the bases. Johnston got the second out of the inning before Garcia singled to drive in the third run. Sabrina Ferguson would reach on an error by the Tigers allowing the tying run to score.

The game remained tied at 4-4 until Bethune-Cookman batted in the bottom of the ninth. Hinds led off with a single and took second on the throw. She would move to third on a muffed throw from the outfield. Garcia's fly out allowed Hinds to score the winning run.

Garcia earned the win in the second game. She threw a complete game allowing four runs on 10 hits and striking out five. Johnston surrendered the run in the ninth and took the loss for the Tigers.

Streets and Delp each had two hits apiece for the Tigers. DiPompo had two RBIs and a run scored while Streets had a run scored and an RBI.
