MEET THE TIGERS: Senior Tennis Player Cassandra Ng

TOWSON, Md.Senior tennis player Cassandra Ng has to think twice before she goes home because logistically, it isn't an easy trip.

She lives 28 hours away from campus.

That's 28 hours by plane.

She lives in Singapore.

"The trip home for me takes 28 hours and includes time on three plane flights and two layovers in the airport," says Ng, who was born and raised in Singapore. She attended high school in Singapore before making the decision to attend college in the United States.

"I always wanted to play competitive college tennis in the U.S. since I was 15," said Ng. "It's tough to play at a highly competitive level while studying at a university at home because the schools in Singapore are so focused on academics."

Ng knew she wanted to go to school on the East Coast.  She found Towson to be in the best location of all the schools she considered. She also liked the fact that it was in proximity to such metropolitan areas as Washington, D.C. and New York but small enough not to get swallowed up and miss the smaller things.

The fact that Maryland experiences seasonal changes was very appealing. Seems Singapore is in the summer all year round and the distinct four seasons influenced her decision as well.

On the court, Ng has been a factor for the Tigers throughout her time at Towson. She has played anywhere from #2 to #6 singles this year and teamed with several different partners in doubles.

"I like being a part of tennis team because it allows be to travel to different schools and states to compete," said Ng. "As a team we get to compete but also to explore different places."

"She is a great teammate, hard worker and most school spirited," said Coach Doug Neagle. "In addition to what her own team is doing, she knows and cheers for all the other teams on campus to."

Off the court, Ng stays busy with her academic work. She is an accounting major in the college of business at Towson.

"Towson has a great accounting program and its accreditation by AACSB International (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) makes it one of the best programs in the world," said Ng.

In addition to her class work where she is carrying a 3.440 grade point average, Ng is a member of the Towson student athlete's service organization, PAWS and a brother of Alpha Phi Omega which is a national service fraternity. Last year she served as the President of the International Student Association and has been a student ambassador since she was a freshman.

She admits she would like to stay in the U.S. after graduation but realizes with the economy situation it might be tough to find a job.

Towson has become Ng's home away from home. She's made the most of her opportunities here, both on the court and in the classroom. It's a long way from Singapore but it has been well worth the trip for her.
