TOWSON, Md. - Junior Katie Ogden posted a personal record and finished second but it wasn't enough as Johns Hopkins successfully defended its team championship in the 28th running of the Baltimore Metro Collegiate Cross Country Meet Friday afternoon at Oregon Ridge Park.
The Blue Jays took both the men's and women's team championships. Goucher junior Joey Negreann won the men's race in 16:07 but the Blue Jays captured the next eight spots to run away with the title. JHU junior Cecilia Furlong took top honors for the women in a time of 18:11.
Ogden posted her best time as a collegian with an 18:27 clocking for the runner up spot but the Blue Jays took the next three places to score a meet low 23 points. The Tigers were second with 32 points with junior Erika Griffith (18:58.06), sophomore Katlyn Dillow (18:58.49), junior Kaylin Gilmartin-Donohue (19:01) and senior captain Brandi Gervais (19:10) placing sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth respectively.
Griffith and Dillow also posted personal records for a 5K race. It was the first sub 19 minute 5K for both runners. Ogden's time was the third fastest for a Towson runner on the Oregon Ridge Park course.
"It was a good start to the season for us," said Tiger coach Roger Erricker. "We'll go forward from here and improve on our performances of today."
The Tigers are back in action again September 18th when they travel to Delaware for the Blue Hen Invitational at White Clay Creek State Park.
