Charlie Cononie Honored By CAA Again

RICHMOND, Va. - Senior righthander Charlie Cononie of the Tigers has been named as the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on April 17, it has been announced by CAA officials.

Cononie, who earned the award for the second time this season, shared the award with junior lefthander Andrew Leenhouts of Northeastern.

The first Tiger pitcher ever to be named CAA Pitcher of the Week more than once, Cononie pitched the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over CAA-leading Delaware on Sunday afternoon.

In the first game of the Tigers' doubleheader sweep, he threw his second two-hit shutout of the season.

Facing a Delaware team that had scored 16 runs on 16 hits in the series opener, Cononie limited the Blue Hens to a pair of singles. He walked two batters and had five strikeouts.

In the fourth inning against the Blue Hens, Cononie faced his toughest challenge. Delaware loaded the bases on a walk, an error and a single. With the bases loaded and no outs, Cononie pitched out of the jam by striking out Nick Yates and getting Dylan Shupe to hit into a double play.

Cononie, who has won five straight decisions, was honored as the CAA Pitcher of the Week on March 28 after pitching a two-hit shutout against Hofstra.

"Charlie has been amazing for us this season," says Coach Mike Gottlieb. "It has gotten to the point where we expect to win when he pitches. He has come a very long way in his career."

Cononie, who was a relief pitcher for the first three seasons of his college career, has made nine starts this season for the Tigers. He has posted a 5-2 record to rank among the top pitchers in the CAA. With a 2.98 E.R.A., he ranks eighth in the CAA. With 69 strikeouts in 57.1 innings, he is second in the CAA.

To date, Cononie has beaten Wake Forest, UNC Wilmington, Hofstra, Old Dominion and Delaware.

In CAA games, he has been even more effective. Cononie has a 4-0 record with a 2.43 E.R.A. in CAA contests. He has made six starts and pitched 40.2 innings against CAA opponents. He has 23 walks and 46 strikeouts.

The Tigers are now 15-19-1 on the season and visit Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon.
