What a Start for the Tigers

TOWSON, Md. - For those who were at Johnny Unitas® Stadium this past Saturday night, you could not have asked for more. The weather was great, the crowd was loud and boisterous and if you are a Tiger fan, the game was near perfection.

The start was shaky to say the least. When Morgan State returned the opening kick-off 85 yards, there were probably many fans in the stands, watching on TV and listening to the radio saying, “Oh no. This could be more of the same.” But, those fans who were thinking that couldn't have been more incorrect. The Bears were able to get three points out of that drive, but of course, they didn't score again the rest of the night.

After having a few days to digest what we saw on Saturday night, if you are an alum of Towson, you could not have been more proud. Kudos go to many. First and foremost, the student body that turned out in record numbers. Coach Rob Ambrose and his players have obviously had an impact on them. Not only were loads of students there, but they were LOUD. Most importantly, they STAYED through most of the game. In years past, you would get a good student showing and they would be gone by halftime. But, not on Saturday night. Of course what was happening on the field had a lot to do with it, but you felt like being at the game was a happening.

I remember back in the early 1980s when the Baltimore Blast used to sell out almost all of their home games. Indoor soccer was new to Baltimore (in fact, it was new to almost the entire nation), but the Blast did a great job of making it the place to be in Baltimore on a weekend night. That's what it felt like Saturday night. "The U" was the place to be.

The Department of Athletics has done a job that was unfathomable in past years. They have made going to a Tiger football game an experience. From the radio booth, I tried as best I could to watch the video board before the game started. What I saw was amazing.  If I was coming to the game as a fan, I would want to get there early just to see what was on the video board. As an aside, I am REALLY short. When they showed my pregame interview with Coach Ambrose, he was sitting on his desk and was STILL taller than me. Oh well.

So after all the excitement of the pregame, fireworks and all, the game started. After that opening kick-off return by the Bears, the REAL fireworks started. All you have to do is stay here on TowsonTigers.com and watch the game highlights and post game interviews to get a sense of just how much the Tigers dominated this game.

How about quarterback Grant Enders in his Towson debut? Not a bad outing when he throws for three touchdowns and running for another. The running back trio of Tremayne Dameron, Dominique Booker and newcomer Sterlin Phifer was fantastic.

Nine different players caught passes in the win, including fullback Tyler Wharton, who caught just three passes all of last season. Tyler matched last season's total on Saturday night with two of them being touchdowns. And none of this could have happened without the offensive line doing an outstanding job.

The defense was just as stellar as the offense. Some of the highlights included Jordan Dangerfield coming up with an inteception and a fumble recovery, Romale Tucker being all over the field, a great return by linebacker Danzel White and a fantastic debut for linebacker Alexander DiSanzo. Every player that was wearing Towson Black and Gold on Saturday night should take a bow for making their school proud.

This week the Tigers jump right into the CAA fray. The Villanova Wildcats will be at Unitas Stadium Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Wildcats are coming off a tough 42-7 loss at the hands of Temple. Coach Andy Talley, whose squad won the national championship just two years ago, aren't used to that type of ball game. No question they will be loaded for Tiger when they come to Towson Saturday.

The Wildcats have beaten the Tigers by a combined 92-10 margin over the past two seasons, so Coach Ambrose won't have to do much motivating.

Hopefully all who came last Saturday night will be back this week along with friends who they told the experience about. Everyone I talked to who was there have done nothing but rave about the whole evening. Lets pack “The U” again this Saturday night.

It would be great to help take this team into their bye next Saturday with a 2-0 record and more importantly 1-0 in the CAA.

See you on the radio Saturday night.

Programming Note: Don't forget Damon Lewis and I are at Bill Bateman's on the Towson campus Thursday night at 6 p.m. for Tiger Talk. Of course, Coach Ambrose will be with us to talk about last week's game against Morgan State and this week's matchup against Villanova. We will also be joined by another member of the Tigers' coaching staff. If you can't make it out to Bateman's, you can listen on WNST-AM 1570 or right here on TowsonTigers.com.
