TOWSON, Md. - The Tiger football team will head to Williamsburg, Va. this weekend to take on the Tribe of William and Mary. Once again, Towson is facing a ranked opponent. But, before we look forward, we have to take a look back at last week.
It's been all over TowsonTigers.com, but it's fun to look back again at what happened around 6:50 p.m. last Saturday evening in Norfolk, Va. With the Tigers having just scored a touchdown and a two point conversion to cut Old Dominion's lead to three, things still looked bleak.
If Towson doesn't recover the on-side kick, the game is just about over. Towson had just one timeout remaining and if the Monarchs don't do something stupid like fumble, the Tigers would be heading back to Towson with their first conference loss of the season. Of course, we all know that the Tigers DID get the on-side kick.
One part of this game that seems to have been downplayed in my opinion is that Grant Enders had to be helped off the field after a sack on second down when he almost had his head ripped off in the process. He had to be helped off the field and less than three minutes of real time later, he comes back in and has to do something on 4th-and-29.
The video of Enders' pass to Tom Ryan that resulted in a 63 yard touchdown pass to win the game will be watched for years to come. (Director of Athletics Mike Waddell will also be able to show his grandkids 30 years from now that he really could motor back in his younger days☺)
It's funny that the Friday night before the game, former Hall of Fame Tiger quarterback Dan Crowley and I were talking about fantastic finishes during his time with the Tigers. Little did we know that we would see one to match them all the following day. It will be a game to savor for years.
But, the season obviously doesn't end in Norfolk on October 15. Coach Rob Ambrose and his players all know that. The Tigers also know that they are heading to a stadium Towson has never won in. As a matter of fact, the Tigers have NEVER beaten Jimmye Laycock's team. They have had their chances; the Tigers lost by one in 2006 and by a touchdown in 2007. The other five times these two teams have played, the Tigers haven't been close.
Towson will come into Saturday's game ranked 15th in the nation. William and Mary will come in with a number 14 national ranking. For the Tigers, they will have to win on the road for the second week in a row. Towson has won back to back road games only once since joining the CAA. That was back in 2006 when they beat Villanova and Delaware, which was led by a certain Baltimore Ravens quarterback named Joe Flacco. It certainly won't be easy.
Going into this week, Towson is the 11th highest ranked FCS team in the nation according to the Sagarin Ratings. William and Mary is not in the Top 25. Of course, we all know the games aren't played by a computer.
For the Tigers to win, they will have to stop William and Mary's great running back Jonathan Grimes. On the other side of the ball, Towson will have to face one of the best defenses in the nation. Let's hope Ron, Damon and I are as happy heading up 64 East as we were last Saturday.
