TOWSON, Md. - While the Tiger football team had a bye this week to prepare for Lehigh, the NCAA FCS
playoffs opened up this past weekend. There were some interesting
results and to nobody's surprise, the CAA won both matchups.
• In Stony Brook, N.Y., Hofstra transfer Brock Jackolski scored three
touchdowns in the second half to rally the host Seawolves past
Albany, 31-28. The Seawolves were down by 28-10 with 13:25 left in the
third quarter before rallying to win their ninth straight game. Albany
was led by QB Dan Di Lella, who completed 24 of 43 for 223 yards. The Great Danes
finish at 8-4 on the season, while Stony Brok (9-3) will travel to
No.1-seeded Sam Houston State (11-0) this week.
• From Cookeville, Tenn., Central Arkansas put up 439 yards of total
offense and never trailed en route to a 34-14 road victory at Tennessee Tech. The Bears (9-3) were playing in their frst FCS playoff game. Nathan Dick threw for two TD passes for
Central Arkansas, including a 42-yard pass to Jesse Grandy and a 30-yard
pass to Thomas Hart in the second half. QB Tre Lamb led Tennessee Tech
with 291 yards and two TDs as the Golden Eagles finished the season with
a 7-4 record. Central Arkansas will now face fourth-seeded Montana on
the road in the second round.
• In Norfolk, Old Dominion hosted Norfolk State in an inter-city battle
between schools that are located just five miles apart. The Monarchs
came out on top as freshman Taylor Heinicke threw for five TD passes to
lead ODU over Norfolk State (9-3), 35-18. This was ODU's first-ever
playoff game in just its first year in the CAA and third year of
football. The Monrachs (10-2) were down early as the Spartans scored on a
98-yard TD reception from Derrick Demps. But after that, it was all Old
Dominion, which scored 35 unanswered points. The Monrachs (10-2) will
play at third-seeded Georgia Southern this Saturday in the second round
of the playoffs.
• James Madison expected a home game, but had to travel for the first
round to face Eastern Kentucky. The Dukes (8-4) needed
a 35-yard field goal as time expired to defeat the Colonels (7-5), who
won six of their last seven regular-season games. JMU was down by 17-7 in
the third quarter and rallied with a Cameron Starke 21-yard field goal and a
24-yard run from Jordan Anderson to tie the game. The Dukes called 68
running plays and rushed for 244 yards while dominating time of possession,
40:30 to 19:30.
H.B. Banjoman ran for two touchdowns while Matt Denham rushed for 125
yards for the Colonels. JMU will now face #2-seeded North Dakota State
on the road in the second round of the FBS playoffs.
The Towson/Lehigh winner will take on the winner of JMU/North Dakota State.
The other matchups in the second round now include:
■ Stony Brook (9-3) at No. 1-seeded Sam Houston State (11-0)
■ New Hampshire (8-3) at Montana State (9-2)
■ Wofford (8-3) at No. 5 University of Northern Iowa (9-2)
