TOWSON, Md. - The Tigers (0-5) are back in action on Wednesday night to face Massachusetts (5-2) at the Mullins Center.
UMass last played Towson on November 20, 1993 when the Minutemen handed the Tigers an 82-55 loss at the Curry Hicks Cage, an older arena that the UMass men's basketball team also uses. One of the players in that game for UMass was Derek Kellogg, who is now the head coach for the Minutemen.
This year's Minutemen squad returns three starters from a team that finished 15-15 overall and 7-9 in the Atlantic 10 last year.
The Minutemen opened the season by winning their first four games, including three at home. They defeated Elon by 18, Northeastern by 16 and NJIT by 21. On Nov. 21, they trounced Boston College on the road, 82-46, which was the largest margin of victory in the 45 games between the in-state rivals.
On Nov. 24, UMass went to the Bahamas for three games at the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Minutemen went 1-2 with blowout losses to Florida State and the College of Charleston. Between those losses, they earned a 14-point win over Utah.
The leading scorer for Umass is a player that Towson fans should be very familiar with. Redshirt sophomore guard Chaz Williams (5-9, 175) stared his career off at Hofstra, averaging around 7.0 points and 4.2 assists per game as a freshman before transferring and sitting out last year.
Williams lead the Minutemen in scoring at 14.1 points per game while shooting 40% from the field and 38% (11-29) from beyond the arc. He also shoots 80% from the free throw line and leads the team with 6.4 assists per game and just over 3 steals per game.
Junior Freddie Riley (6-5, 190) is the shooting guard who starts alongside Williams. Riley shoots just 28% from the field and 21% (9-44) from beyond the arc while averaging 6.6 points per game.
Up front, UMass will likely go with Sean Carter (6-9, 245) in the middle. Carter is an Oregon State transfer who gives the team solid defense and rebounding. He averages 4.1 points and 5.1 rebounds while shooting 52% from the floor.
Junior Terrell Vinson (6-7, 220) should be familiar to local Baltimore high school fans, having played at St. Frances Academy. Vinson is the Minutemen's third-leading scorer at nine points per game, but averages a team-high six rebounds per contest. He shoots 40% from the floor and 81% from the line, but just 25% (6-of-24) from the three-point line.
At the small forward spot, junior Javorn Farrell (6-5, 215) is the team's second-leading scorer at 9.6 points per game. Farrell, who comes from Woodbridge, Va., played his high school ball at Riverdale Baptist H.S. (Md.). He shoots 46% from the field and 35% (8-23) from beyond the arc.
UMass has a pretty good bench led by junior big man Sampson Carter (6-8, 220), who averages 8.6 points per game and 3.9 rebounds per game while playing 19.1 minutes per outing. Sophomore Raphiale Ptuney (6-9, 185) is another Woodbridge, Va. native who adds a lot of length. He averages 7.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 49% from the field and 35% (8-23) from beyond the arc in 14.7 minutes per contest.
Another intriguing player coming off the bench is sophomore guard Jesse Morgan (6-5, 190), who averages 6.9 points per game while shooting 35% from the field and 36% (11-31) from the three-point line.
Freshman Cody Lalanne (6-0, 250) adds size off the bench. In just 14.1 minutes per game, Lalanne averages 5.9 rebounds and 6.6 points per game.
The game will be broadcast on WNST-AM 1570 and there will be an in-game blog at TowsonTigers.com.
