Men's Basketball

Everybody is a Critic

TOWSON, Md. - It's understandable why nobody wants to discuss IT. IT is the elephant in the room. IT's the monkey on everybody's back.

We've heard all the cliches. Now, it's time to address the most pressing problem in Towson Athletics today. So, will it snow on March 3 when the men's lacrosse team plays its first home game against Mount St. Mary's?

Maybe that's not the most pressing question because we all avoid the obvious. That is because everybody else reminds us how many basketball games we've lost in a row.

Kind of like Seth Davis, the college basketball writer from Sports Illustrated and in-studio analyst on CBS. Davis tweeted this gem this past week on @SethDavisHoops.

"Towson scored 27 pts vs Drexel to lose its Div I record-tying 34th straight game. One of dozens of teams with NO business competing in D-1."

Nice. It's bad enough to start your season winless, but to have some sports writer who graduated from Duke and grew up in the Washington D.C. suburbs tell us we don't belong in Division I is sort of like rubbing salt on the wound. Can you say elitist?

While Davis was getting ready to graduate from Duke in 1992, Towson was winning back-to-back East Coast Conference titles (1990 and 1991) and heading to the NCAA Tournament in two straight years. That was in Division I by the way.

Sure, mistakes have been made along the way. And you have to learn from past mistakes to earn success in the future. But, you have to love those who jump on the hater bandwagons all over Twitter and on the message boards. Revenge will be sweet in the future to those who have mocked us. I've been waiting a long time but I can finally see the pot at the end of the rainbow thanks to a recruiting class that will easily rank amongst the best in the CAA.

For now, we have to take our knocks. Just imagine how tough it is in the locker room. Nobody outside those who have followed the program really understand what the team has been through. I've gone over it numerous times how Towson returned no starters and one returning letterwinner in Erique Gumbs. That's basically unheard of in Division I college basketball.

After a recent home loss to Northeastern, Gumbs gave a mature and polished take on the adversity of this season.

"Just look at it as a new day," said the redshirt sophomore. "You can't forget and you're not going to forget. But, you have to take the positive and try and carry that over more than the negative. You just have to start doing things to cut the negative out. Eventually something's gotta to give. You just have to keep playing hard."

This team plays hard, but stats don't lie. The Tigers are in last place in just about every offensive and defensive category in the CAA. But, the worst stat all season has been turnovers. Towson is -8.81 in turnover ratio as the Tigers average 19.3 turnovers per game and force just 10.5 giveaways.

"We've found a lot of ways to turn the basketball over this year," said Coach Pat Skerry after the Northeastern game last Monday night. "We have to continue to improve our skill level or we have to get guys with better skill. If anybody has an offense where you don't have to dribble or pass it, I'll run it."

So, as the Tigers prepare for their home game against William & Mary on Wednesday night, remember what these coaches and players have gone through.

We can talk about the future, the new arena set to open in 2013 (looking great by the way), the two transfers coming in (Jerrelle Benimon and Mike Burwell) and the four highly-regarded freshmen coming in next season.

But, what these kids really need is for all their hard work to pay off with a W-I-N.
