Nadelen Testing His Tigers as Practices Begin

TOWSON, Md. - How did you spend your Sunday evening?

Perhaps you reveled in the Baltimore Ravens' 20-13 victory over the Houston Texans. Or, maybe you watched the New York Giants become the first road team to win a game in this edition of the NFL's playoffs.

Maybe you watched HBO? It's not TV, you know ... it's HBO.

Regardless, for the Towson men's lacrosse team, the squad may have had the opportunity to watch the Ravens victory Sunday afternoon, but once the sun went down, the Tigers reported to Johnny Unitas® Stadium. They had some running to do.

A lot of running.

This wasn't some form of punishment from first-year Coach Shawn Nadelen; it was simply a test to see who had been voluntarily keeping themselves in shape over the holidays. By the coaching staff's count, a little over two-thirds of the team passed.

Not bad, but not where Nadelen hoped his team would be from a fitness standpoint.

The test -- which consisted of a 70-yard sprint, 50-yard sprint and 30-yard shuttle runs, repeated for "four quarters" -- was designed by Towson's Director of Strength and Conditioning, Jesse Judy.

According to Nadelen, the workout regimen put in place by Judy has been incredibly beneficial to the lacrosse program.

"He [Judy] really engulfed himself into our sport," said Nadelen. "He really studied and saw what movements and what kind of athletes we had and the conditioning and agility aspects of the sport of lacrosse."

Nadelen added, "Whether it be short, fast sprints, long distance running or change of direction exercises, all those things are incorporated into what we do on a daily basis, but also incorporated into the 'run test' because in the course of a game you're going to be doing all those things."

As the men's lacrosse team took the turf at Unitas Stadium Sunday evening, the video camera was rolling and Coach Nadelen was "mic'd up," allowing fans an opportunity to get his perspective while the Tigers completed their test.
