ATLANTA, Ga. – Senior guard Krystal Parnell went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final minute
1:10 to help the Tigers secure a 56-52 victory at Georgia State on Sunday
afternoon. Parnell and sophomore guard Tanisha McTiller scored 16 points each to lead the Tigers (12-6, 3-4 CAA) to just
their second ever win in Atlanta.
Georgia State (6-12, 0-7 CAA) opened the game on
a 7-2 run as Kendra Long hit a
three-pointer at 17:03. The Tigers responded with a 12-0 run to take a 14-7
lead with 10:23 to play in the half. McTiller tallied four for the Tigers during
that run. The Panthers responded with a 6-0 run of their own to make it a 14-13
game with 6:43 remaining in the half. Towson
closed the half on an 11-4 run to take a 25-19 lead at the half. McTiller had
seven of the Tigers' 11 during that spurt.
Towson shot 22.9% from the floor in the first half while Georgia State shot 29.2%. The Tigers held a
slight 26-24 advantage on the boards in the first 20 minutes of action.
The Tigers
scored the first seven points of the second half to extend their advantage to
32-19 with 17:07 to play. The 13-point advantage was the Tigers' largest of the
game. The two teams battled on both ends of the court over the next several
minutes as Tiffany Anderson hit a
lay-up at 13:26 to make it a 36-33 game. Parnell answered with a three-pointer
to give the visitors a 39-33 lead with 12:45 to play. Georgia
State scored seven of the next nine
points to cut Towson's
lead to 41-40 with 10:04 to play. The Tigers would answer by scoring the next
five points to make it a 46-40 game with 6:14 to play. The two teams traded
baskets with senior guard Deree Fooks' hitting
a lay-up at 2:41 to put Towson
up 50-44. The Panthers would cut it to 50-48 with 1:28 to play. Parnell would
then go perfect from the foul line in the final 1:10 to hold off the Panthers
for the 56-52 victory.
The Tigers
shot 28.6% from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting
25.4%. Towson
was 14-for-21 from the foul line in the second half and finished the game
shooting 58.3% from the line. Georgia
State shot 32.4% from the
floor in the second half and finished the game shooting 31%. Towson held a 51-43 advantage in the
rebounding battle.
Parnell
added eight rebounds, four assists and one steal to her 16 points. McTiller
contributed five rebounds and two steals in addition to her points. Senior
guard Sheree Ledbetter led the
Tigers with a season-high 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Destiny Shearin had a season-high eight points and grabbed five
rebounds.
Long and Chan Harris led Georgia State
with 13 points each. Harris would add 10 rebounds for the “double-double” while
Long had five rebounds. Jerlisa Taylor contributed
five points, nine rebounds and six assists off the bench.
Towson returns to action when it travels
to George Mason on Thursday, Jan. 26 for a 7 p.m. game.
