CENTREVILLE, Mass. – Senior Kacy Catanzaro of Towson University has been honored as the winner of
the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Gymnast of the Week Award for
the week ending January 22, it has been announced by ECAC officials.
A three-time All-ECAC first team selection on
vault, Catanzaro led the Tigers to a first place finish in a tri meet in the
Towson Center on Sunday. Competing in their home opener, the Tigers earned a
193.00 team score to beat Alaska (187.875) and William and Mary (184.900). With
the double win, the Tigers improved to 6-0 on the season.
The winner of the ECAC Coaches' Choice Award last
week, Catanzaro won the all-around competition. She also finished first on the
vault, bars and balance beam.
She won the all-around title with a 38.90 score. It
was the fourth all-around title of her career and the first title since her
freshman year. Catanzaro was unable to compete as an all-around as a sophomore
and junior due to injuries.
Catanzaro won the vault competition with a career
high 9.875 score. She also set a career high on uneven bars with a 9.825 score
as she won the bars competition for the second consecutive meet. On balance
beam, she finished first with a 9.75 score. On floor exercise, she earned a
9.45 score to finish 14th in the meet.
"Kacy had a great meet
for us,” said Towson Coach Vicki Chliszczyk. “At Ursinus, she had a mishap on vault. But, this week she
bounced back and came up with a huge vault, setting her career high. Her vault
score was huge for Kacy and it really gave our team a lift.”
In Sunday's meet, Catanzaro became only the 43rd
gymnast in school history to score 1,000 points.
The unbeaten Tigers return to action on Sunday,
January 29 when they visit West Virginia University for a meet against the
Mountaineers and George Washington University.
