Men's Basketball

This and That

TOWSON, Md. - The struggles continue for the Tiger men's basketball team as the Colonial Athletic Association schedule continues.

In their loss against George Mason on Saturday, the Tigers were down by 44-27 at halftime and you'd figure that a team that hadn't won a game all season that was playing in front of a hostile crowd would pack it in. Not the case.

After falling behind by 49-31 with 15:47 left, the Tigers went on a 10-0 run to trim the lead to eight points with 12:48 to go. Sophomore Marcus Damas, who led the Tigers with 19 points, scored eight of those points during the run. Towson eventually got the deficit down to five points with 2:17 remaining, but could not close out the deal.

On Monday night, the Tigers made the short trip to Newark, Del. to take on the Blue Hens.  The Tigers battled through the first half and trailed by just two points at the break.

But, the second half saw Delaware's Devon Saddler, one of the best 2 guards in the league, carry the Blue Hens to a 62-43 victory.

Obviously, this is not what Coach Pat Skerry envisioned for his club before the season started. But, as you watch these young Tigers, what you see is a team that never quits and comes into every game thinking that this will be their night.

The Tigers have two games at the Towson Center this week, hosting VCU on Wednesday night before entertaining UNC Wilmington on Saturday afternoon. The team is not quitting and the rest of us shouldn't either.

Next Wednesday is a big day for the football team. It's National Signing Day and if Coach Rob Ambrose's tweets are any indication, this will be a great day for the Tigers.

Coach Ambrose likes to talk about how signing day is like Christmas day for the coaches.  They all work extremely hard recruiting and February 1 will be the day they get to “open the presents.” Stick right here to TowsonTigers.com all day next Wednesday as the coaches will be on hand to talk about the players as the letters of intent start to roll in.

Then, next Wednesday night, Coach Ambrose will be at Bill Bateman's Bistro in Towson to show video of the newest young Tigers. It's always a fun evening and a chance to get a football fix out of season.

I had a chance to speak with first-year men's lacrosse coach Shawn Nadelen last week and even though it's still the middle of winter, lacrosse practice is well underway. The Tigers open their season on February 11 against Jacksonville for their first-ever meeting against the Dolphins.

It's then a short week as the Tigers will travel to Homewood Field for a matchup with the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays on Friday, Feb. 17. It should be quite balmy. I believe the only other time in the last 25 years that the Tigers have played on a Friday night were a few occasions up at Hofstra.

Coach Nadelen is excited about his team and he should be. Let's remember that even though the Tigers went 3-10 last year, they lost five games by a goal. One of those games that really sticks out was early in the year against Loyola where the Tigers lost, 3-2, late in the game. A victory there and the season may have gone differently. The midfield will be young, but there is experience on the attack and in the goal. Can't wait to get started.

Programming Note: Damon Lewis and I will be with you from Bill Bateman's Bistro in Towson this Thursday for another edition of Tiger Talk from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Joining Coach Nadelen will be assistant men's basketball coach Kevin Clark. Hope you can all make it out, but if not, you can hear Tiger Talk on WNST-AM 1570 or right here at TowsonTigers.com.
