Unbeaten Tigers Visit No. 25 West Virginia

TOWSON, Md. - Off to a fine start with a 6-0 record, the undefeated Towson University gymnastics team will put its perfect record on the line when the Tigers travel to Morgantown, West Virginia to face the Mountaineers and George Washington University on Sunday, January 29 at 1:00 p.m.

The Tigers, who beat Alaska and William & Mary in their home opener on Sunday, earned a 193.00 team score to win the meet. The Tigers, who opened the season with a 190.300 score at Ursinus, have a 191.650 average after two meets.

Ranked 25th in the nation with a 194.00 average, the Mountaineers have a 3-1 record. WVU owns wins over Maryland, Bowling Green and Rutgers while losing to Penn State. Sophomore Hope Sloanhoffer has a 39.067 average in the all-around and is coming off a 39.30 performance in the all-around against Rutgers.

George Washington is 5-2 on the season. After finishing second in their own Lindsay Ferris Invitational Meet two weeks ago, they lost a meet at Ohio State. The Colonials are averaging 189.613 in their two meets this season.

Coach Vicki Chliszczyk was very pleased with the progress that the Tigers made from their opening meet to their home opener. She said, "We made a lot of progress from the first meet to the second, especially on the balance beam. We didn't count any falls. Plus, our freshmen were much calmer this past week. Hopefully, we can keep getting better.”

Seniors Kacy Catanzaro and Lindsay Poplaski have been the Tigers' top all-arounds this season. Honored as the ECAC Gymnast of the Week last week, Catanzaro won the vault, bars and beam in the victory over Alaska and William & Mary. Catanzaro, who has won the bars competition in the first two meets of the season, recorded career highs in vault and bars. She also won the all-around competition with a 38.90 score.

Poplaski, who won the all-around competition in the season opener, has a 38.413 all-around average this season. In Sunday's meet, she set a career high with her 38.75 all-around score. Poplaski also recorded a 9.80 on floor exercise, another career high. Junior Britney Russell has been the Tigers' top performer on floor exercise. With a 9.81 average, she ranks 11th in the NCAA Southeast region. Catanzaro ranks ninth in the region with a 9.81 average on the uneven bars.

TIGER TALES: In the win over Alaska and William & Mary, Catanzaro became the 43rd gymnast in the history of the Towson program to record 1,000 career points … Poplaski reached the milestone last season.

Coach Chliszczyk is starting her second season as the Tigers' coach … Honored as the ECAC Coach of the Year in 2011, she led the Tigers to an 18-1 record last season … A former assistant coach at the University of Maryland, she enters Sunday's meet with a career record of 24-1.
