SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 3 Syracuse University defeated
the No. 18 Towson University women's lacrosse team 18-7 on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomores
Kelly Murkey and Andi Raymond scored two goals each to
lead the Tigers (4-2).
The Tigers
opened the first half with strong play on the offensive end. Goals from
sophomores Kelly Murkey and Andi Raymond gave the visitors a 2-1
lead with 24:01 to play in the half. The Orange
(4-2) would score the next four goals of the game to take a 5-2 lead with 14:40
remaining in the half.
Raymond's
second goal of the game broke up the Syracuse
run and pulled the Tigers to within two, at 5-3 with 11:11 to go in the half. Syracuse would score five
of the final six goals in the half to take a 10-4 lead at the break. Junior Kelly Custer scored off an assist from
senior Sarah Appelt for the Tigers'
goal during that stretch.
Syracuse held a 14-9 advantage in shots and
a 9-6 edge in draw controls.
The Orange scored the first
goal of the second half before sophomore Rhiannon Coogle scored to make it an 11-5 game with 28:31 to play. Syracuse would score six times in the next 17
minutes to take a 17-5 lead with 11:10 to play. Towson closed the game by scoring two of the
final three goals. Murkey scored her second of the game before Appelt scored on
a free position shot.
Towson out shot the Orange, 13-9 in
the second half as Syracuse
finished the game with a 23-22 advantage. Syracuse
won 15 of the 27 draw controls in the game. Both teams collected 12 ground
balls.
Alyssa Constantino made three saves in the first half
to earn in the win in goal. Kelse
Richardson made seven saves in the second half for the Orange. Senior Mary Teeters made four saves in goal for the Tigers while playing
48:11. Freshman Kelsea Donnelly played
the other 11:49 for the Tigers.
Raymond led
the Tigers with two goals and one assist while Murkey had the two goals. Appelt
finished with a goal and an assist in the game.
Michelle Tumolo led Syracuse with five goals and three assists in
the game while Alyssa Murray had
three goals and two assists.
The Tigers
return to action on Saturday, Mar. 17 when they host Richmond at 1 p.m.
