TOWSON, Md. – Katie Lingmai threw her third shutout of the season Tuesday afternoon against
the Seton Hall Pirates (10-10) as part of a 1-0 Towson (10-9, 0-0 CAA) victory
in the final game of a doubleheader at the Tiger Softball Complex. Seton Hall
won the first game 9-5.
The junior pitcher allowed five hits and struck
out seven batters en route to her fifth win of the season and lowered her
earned run average to 2.25.
After allowing just three hits in the
first six innings, the Pirates loaded the bases against Lingmai in the top of
the seventh inning. After Sarah Haefeli
and pinch-hitter Kirby Groves both
singled, Lingmai got Brittany Hammer
to pop-up for the second out. She then walked Laura Canulli to load the bases
before getting Kristen Kaelin to fly
out and end the game.
“Seton Hall has had some quality wins
and they will have more down the road,” Towson Head Coach Lisa Costello said. “The difference in the second game was we did
not allow any runs. We set the table in the first inning and fortunately that
was enough for us.”
The Tigers scored the lone run of the
game in the first inning on Brianna Jones' RBI-single that scored Stef Polonia. Polonia singled to left field to lead-off the game against Seton
Hall starting pitcher Casey Moses.
Seton Hall got to Towson starting
pitcher Dominique Ortega early in
the first game, scoring six runs in the first two innings. The Pirates'
Danielle DeStaso hit a three-run home run to cap off a four-run first inning
for the Pirates. The Pirates added a total of three runs in the sixth and seventh
innings to hold on for the 9-5 win.
“We got behind early, but I was proud
of the way we chipped away,” Costello said. “I admire the fight that we had.”
