TOWSON, Md. – Freshman righthander Anthony Magovney came out of the bullpen and pitched six shutout innings to earn his first collegiate victory as Buffalo (5-6) came from behind to edge Towson University, 8-6, in a non-conference game at John B. Schuerholz Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Magovney came in from the bullpen in the third inning with the Bulls trailing, 6-4. He shut out the Tigers on three hits until turning the game over to senior righthander Kevin Crumb in the ninth inning.

With the score tied at 6-6 in the eighth inning, junior first baseman Ryan Tulloch opened the inning with a single to right.  After second baseman Jon Mestas bunted him over to second base, junior leftfielder Matt Pollock lined a two-run homer down the left field line, giving the Bulls their first lead of the game.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Tigers made a bid to tie the game. Sophomore Dominic Fratantuono kept the inning alive against Crumb with a single to right. After junior catcher Andrew Parker drew a walk on a full count, sophomore rightfielder Brandon Gonnella came to bat. He made a bid for a base hit to right but Mestas made a diving stop and threw Gonnella out at first base.

The Tigers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore second baseman Pat Fitzgerald led off with a single. He went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Richie Blosser. When Fratantuono hit a ground ball that went through Mestas' legs at second, he was on base on an error as Fitzgerald scored the first run of the game. Parker reached base on an infield single down the third base line. Gonnella followed with a hard single to right, scoring Fratantuono to make it a 2-0 lead. With runners on first and third and one out, the Tigers were in position to add to their lead. However, senior righthander Jeff Thompson pitched out of the jam by retiring senior centerfielder Ben Winter on an infield pop-up. Then, junior catcher Tom Murphy threw out Gonnella, who was trying to steal second base.

In the second inning, the Bulls loaded the bases with no outs when senior rightfielder Dan Scahill led off with a single and junior righthander Mike Volpe issued back-to-back walks to sophomore shortstop Mike Burke and freshman designated hitter Tyler Mautner. However, Volpe worked out of the jam with minimal damage. Junior third baseman River McWilliams drove in a run when he grounded into a force play as Mautner was retired at second base while Scahill scored. But, the Bulls couldn't score any more runs as Volpe struck out Tulloch and Mestas grounded out.

Leading by 2-1, the Tigers added four runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead. Freshman first baseman Peter Bowles led off with a double to centerfield. After freshman third baseman Ryne Willard bunted him over to third base, Bowles scored on a single to centerfield by sophomore shortstop Hunter Bennett. When Fitzgerald singled to right, the Tigers had two runners on base. With two outs, Fratantuono lined his second home run of the season just inside the right field foul pole to give Towson a 6-1 advantage.

In the third inning, Buffalo staged another rally and knocked Volpe out of the game. Junior leftfielder Matt Pollock led off with a walk. With one out, Murphy drew a walk. When Scahill doubled off the leftfield fence, Pollock scored to cut the deficit to 6-2. With runners on second and third and one out, sophomore lefthander Kyle Paul was summoned from the bullpen to relieve Volpe. When Burke hit a sacrifice fly, Murphy scored to pull the Bulls to within 6-3. A single by Mautner drove in Murphy, making it 6-4. McWilliams followed with another single before Paul retired Tulloch on a ground ball to first base.

Magovney came on to pitch the third inning for Buffalo and he retired the Tigers in order.

In the fourth inning, the Bulls rallied for two runs with two outs to tie the game.  With two outs, junior centerfielder Jason Kanzler blasted a triple to right centerfield. When Murphy lined a double left, Kanzler scored to make it a 6-5 game. Moments later, Scahill tied the game with an RBI single to right.

After the Bulls tied the game, Paul shut out the Bulls until the seventh inning when he was relieved by junior righthander Mike Bronakoski.

Scahill led the Bulls with four hits and two RBI's as Buffalo outhit Towson, 14-11. Pollock added two hits and drove in two runs.

Fratantuono and Bowles led the Tigers with three hits each. Fratantuono had three hits, scored two runs and had three RBI's while Bowles went three-for-four.

The Tigers, who lost for the first time in four home games, return to action on Wednesday when they host George Washington at 3:00 p.m.
