TOWSON, Md. – Towson University women’s basketball coach Joe Mathews announced that Alliyah Berger (Archbishop Carroll H.S./Landover, Md.) and Dominique Johnson (Riverdale Baptist H.S./Laurel, Md.) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Towson and will compete for the Tigers starting next season.

“I am excited to welcome Alliyah and Domonique to our program,” said Mathews.

Berger is a 5-10 combo guard who led the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference in scoring. She averaged six rebounds per game while earning first team All-WCAC honors as a senior. A two-time All-Met selection, Berger hit 66 three-pointers, the third most in the WCAC. She had success in the classroom as well as an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society.

“Alliyah has a great knack for scoring,” said Mathews. “She is a terrific long-range shooter, but she gets to the basket and loves contact.  She is a physical perimeter player and I really like her basketball IQ.”

Mathews added, “Typically, players that score in bunches really understand the game and that is certainly true of Alliyah.  The Washington D.C. area is deep in talent and tradition and for Alliyah to be among the top scorers in that area speaks volumes to her potential.”

Johnson is a 5-7 guard who helped Riverdale Baptist post a 33-3 record. Johnson and the Crusaders finished third nationally in the USA Today poll and sixth in the Powerade Fab 50 rankings. Riverdale Baptist captured the 2012 NACA national championship with Johnson’s help. An All-Met selection as a junior, Johnson led the team in three-pointers made with 28.

“Dominique competed at the highest high school level you can play at Riverdale Baptist,” said Mathews.  “Coach Diane Richardson does an incredible job and her teams consistently compete in the top 10 nationally.”

Mathews added, “Dominique has an understanding of how to compete for championships and what it takes to be successful at the highest level.  She possesses that ability to make her teammates better while still finding way to get her own.  She is a very complete offensive player and will continue to get better.”

Berger and Johnson join a group of nine returning letter winners for the 2012-13 season.
