TOWSON, Md. - While the Colonial Athletic Association champion women's lacrosse team hosts Monmouth with an NCAA Tournament berth on the line, the Tiger men's lacrosse team and the track and field team will be involved in CAA championship action this week. Meanwhile, the baseball and softball teams look to qualify for the post-season tournaments.
Coming off an 8-7 win over James Madison in the CAA championship game on Sunday, Coach Sonia LaMonica and the women's lacrosse team will be seeking their tenth victory in a row when they host Northeast Conference champion Monmouth (9-10) in an NCAA Play-In Game at Unitas Stadium on Saturday night.
Now 15-3 on the season, the Tigers won their fourth CAA championship since the 2005 season. Towson went 7-0 to win the CAA regular season title and then beat Drexel (12-11) and JMU (8-7) to win the title. Monmouth took a much different path to the NEC championship. Seeded third in the NEC Tournament, the Hawks upset Quinnipiac in the semi-finals and trimmed Mount St. Mary's in the championship game, 11-3.
Despite ending the regular season with four straight losses, the Tiger men's lacrosse team qualified for the CAA Tournament. The Tigers, now 7-7 on the season, are the number four seed and will travel to top-seeded Massachusetts on Wednesday night. UMass is ranked number two in the nation with a 14-0 record. If the Tigers upset UMass, they will face either Penn State or Drexel in the CAA Championship Game on Saturday.
The Tiger track and field team makes the short trip to George Mason University this weekend to compete for the CAA Championship. The meet will be held on Friday and Saturday.
Hoping to qualify for the CAA Tournament, the Tiger softball team will be trying to clinch the number four seed this weekend when Towson visits James Madison University for a three-game series. The Tigers, who are 25-26 overall, own a two-game lead in the CAA standings over Drexel and Delaware.
Seeking to snap a six-game losing streak, the Tiger baseball team travels to UNC Wilmington for a three-game series this weekend. Towson has a 10-11 record in the CAA and is tied for fifth in the league standings.
