DOVER, Del. – Playing their final non-conference
opponent of the season, the Tigers (25-27, 8-10 CAA) were defeated by the
Delaware State Hornets Tuesday by a score of 6-1 in Dover.
Though the Tiger lineup had more walks (six) than strikeouts
(five) in the game, five Delaware State pitchers gave up a combined three
Towson hits. No Hornets pitcher threw more than 2.2 innings.
The Tigers kept the game close early, as the team scored its
first run courtesy of senior first baseman Andrea Stevenson. After Mickelle Oslin
led off the third inning with a walk, she advanced to second base thanks to a
sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Jillian Donnelly. Now in scoring position, Oslin crossed home plate as Stevenson
drilled a double to deep centerfield, pulling the Tigers even with the home
team and knotting the game at 1-1.
The Hornets would answer with two runs in the bottom of the
third and added three more in the fourth inning, when Stephanie Martello hit a three-run home run to give Delaware State
(23-16-1) the 6-1 lead. Martello's shot with one out in the inning scored
teammates Kelsey Lewis and Jordan Reid. Lewis was pinch-running
for the Hornets' Leslie Pleasanton,
who singled to lead off the fourth.
Stevenson went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Tigers and is
now batting .292, the third-best average on Towson. Oslin had two walks and a
run scored, while senior centerfielder Erika Stasch went 1-for-2 with a walk for the Tigers.
Stasch leads the team with seven home
runs and 37 runs batted in this season.
The Tigers will close the regular season with a three-game
series at conference rival James Madison beginning with a doubleheader Friday
at 3 p.m. At 8-10 in the Colonial Athletic Association, the Tigers are in
fourth place in the league and remain in the hunt for a CAA Tournament berth.
