Smith Breaks School Record on Second Day of ECACs

PRINCETON, N.J. - A new Towson University school record was set Saturday to highlight the second day of the Eastern College Athletic College Championships for the Tigers.

Senior Shianna Smith, competing in the final meet of her career, broke her own record in the hammer throw with a 173' 2" result Saturday, over four feet longer than her previous record of 168' 8" set earlier this season.

"She had a good week of practice and she had a lot of confidence," Towson head coach Roger Erricker said. "That's a record that's going to be around for a while. I feel really good for (throws coach) John Govern, too, because he taught her how to throw at that level. A heck of a lot of credit goes to him, too."

Freshmen Emily Wenger and Alexis Appezzato each got their first taste of ECAC competition for the Tigers. Wenger, competing in the 400-meter hurdles, finished with a time of 1:03.88 in the preliminaries while Appezzato came in 16th in the javelin with a throw of 133' 9".

Junior Jessica Cooke wrapped up the heptathlon with three events Saturday and concluded with 4,105 points overall. Cooke's best event in the heptathlon was the 100-meter hurdles, where she finished with a total of 738 points.

The Tigers finish up the ECACs Sunday when Evan Campbell will compete in the high jump.
