TOWSON, Md. – Towson University's Department of Athletics has released the latest installment of its 2011-12 Points of Pride. The Points of Pride have been designed to highlight and represent the best of Tiger Athletics and will be updated on a monthly basis.
Baseball:
• Freshman outfielder Peter Bowles was named Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week on April 16 after batting .588 and leading the Tigers to a 3-2 record. During that time, Bowles had four multi-hit games.
• Junior third baseman Zach Fisher has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® District II All-Academic baseball team and will be a candidate for Academic All-America® honors.
Community Service:
• Football head coach Rob Ambrose, Director of Development for team support Dan Crowley and members of the football team volunteered along with the Brigance Brigade in the running of the Fiesta 5K race, benefitting research and awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at The Johns Hopkins University. The Brigance Brigade is run by former Baltimore Raven O.J. Brigance who suffers from the disease. Towson volunteered a total of 27 community service hours to the race.
• The men's soccer team participated in Baltimore's "Soccer Without Borders" program in early May, designed to provide young participants from all over the world with an avenue for positive engagement, personal growth and passion for the game.
• Members of the men's basketball team assisted with the copywriting and character development for a play by Center Stage of Baltimore City.
• Various members of the Department of Athletics and Towson student-athletes volunteered at the Rodgers Forge Tech Trek, aimed at helping Rodgers Forge Elementary raise money for itstechnology needs.
• Student-athletes and members of the Towson Kinesiology Department hosted a group of students from Kenwood High School for a discussion of sport-related careers and tour of the Towson campus.
Football
• The Tigers recently held its end of the year ceremony, the Gridiron Gala, and received their CAA Championship rings.
• At the ceremony, numerous members of the team were given awards for their contribution during the season.
• Senior defensive tackle Marcus Valentine was given the Doc Minnegan Award as the team's most valuable player, sophomore quarterback Grant Enders and freshman running back Terrance West shared the Co-Offensive Player of the Year award, junior defensive back Jordan Dangerfield was named Defensive Player of the Year and freshman returner Derrick Joseph was named Special Teams Player of the Year.
• Other award winners included senior offensive tackle Henry Glackin, who was given the Tiger Award (given to the player who most epitomizes Towson football), and senior quarterback Brian Potts, who was given the Tiger Scholar-Athlete Award.
• Freshmen Clayton Minott, Tyler Magill and Arione Scott were also honored for their work on the scout team. Minott was given the Scout Team Offensive Player of the Year, Magill the defensive award and Scott the special teams recognition.
Men's Lacrosse:
• Sophomore defender John Fennessy and classmate Thomas DeNapoli (pictured) garnered postseason awards as the duo was named second team All-Colonial Athletic Association selections. Fennessy was second on the team with 14 caused turnovers while DeNapoli was Towson's leading scorer with 28 points.
• Freshmen Jojo Ostrander and Justin Mabus were also named to the CAA's All-Rookie lacrosse team. Mabus, who won the conference's rookie of the week award twice during the regular season, had 15 points and was second on the team with 11 assists. Ostrander was called upon to defend the opposition's top scorer on a regular basis and ended the year with 18 groundballs and 11 caused turnovers.
Softball:
• Junior pitcher Katie Lingmai and freshman shortstop Hailey Balk were named to the CAA softball second team at the conference's awards banquet on May 8.
• Lingmai, Towson's all-time strikeout leader, Lingmai set a single-season school record with 203 strikeouts this season. She is the only player in school history with more than 500 strikeouts for a career (524) and 200 strikeouts in a single season. Lingmai was second in the conference with 192.2 innings pitched in 2012.
• Balk, who was also named to the CAA All-Rookie team, was the fifth-leading hitter in the conference with a .350 batting average. She established the second-longest hitting streak of 18 consecutive games during the season. She had 17 games of two or more hits and was named CAA Rookie of the Week on April 16.
Track and Field:
• Five Tigers were given All-CAA recognition by the league after their performances at the CAA Championship meet at George Mason on May 5.
• Graduate student Katie Ogden finished third in the 10K event at the meet, senior Shianna Smith was third in the hammer throw, Jessica Cooke was third in the heptathlon, freshman Emily Wenger third in the 400-meter hurdles and classmate Alexis Appezzato second in the javelin.
• Junior Katie Salke (heptathlon) and Emma Tobin (steeplechase) also earned Honorable mention All-Conference for their performances at the CAAs.
Women's Lacrosse:
• The Tigers won their fourth Colonial Athletic Association Championship since 2005 on April 29 in an 8-7 win against James Madison University.
• The team was in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time since 2005, hosting a home game for the first time in program history.
• Towson finished the season undefeated in CAA play (7-0) for the first time in program history.
• The Tigers set records for most wins (16) and home wins (11) in a single-season in school history.
• Sophomore attacker Andi Raymond, junior midfielder Kelly Custer, junior defender Alexa Demski and senior goalkeeper Mary Teeters all were named First Team All-CAA.
• Junior midfielder Ashley Waldron was a Second Team All-CAA honors while freshman defender Michelle Dufault earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
• With her appearance in the CAA Championship game against JMU on April 29, Teeters broke the school record for most game played in a career. She has played in 75 games at Towson.
• Teeters was named the CAA's Tournament's Most Outstanding Player
