TOWSON, Md. - Junior place kicker D.J. Soven has been named to the Place Kickers Watch List by the College Sports Performance Awards.
Last season, Soven had a terrific year as the Tigers' place kicker. He scored 74 points as the Tigers' second-leading scorer. He connected on seven-of-eight field goal attempts and made 53 of 56 conversion kicks.
Soven was a perfect three-for-three on kicks beyond 30 yards. The only field goal he missed was a 24-yard attempt at Maryland in the final seconds of the first half when the Tigers had to rush their field goal team on to the field.
Soven kicked a 36-yard field goal in the Tigers' win over Villanova in his first career attempt. He was the hero of Towson's 31-28 victory over Richmond when he kicked a game-winning 27-yard field goal on the final play of the game. He fought off the pressure after Richmond took two time outs.
He played a key role in Towson's 39-35 win at Old Dominion. He kicked a career long 47-yard field goal in the first half. In the final minutes of the game, he executed a perfect onsides kick, giving the Tigers the chance for an improbable win.
His 19-yard field goal in the fourth quarter at William and Mary gave Towson a 38-27 lead. He also kicked a 28-yarder against Delaware to help the Tigers grab a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.
In the final weeks of the regular season, the Tiger offense was so efficient that Soven went three games without a field goal attempt. In the Tigers' FCS playoff game against Lehigh, he kicked a 45-yard field goal in the first quarter.
