TOWSON, Md. - The 2011-12 school year was one
filled with memories and highlights for the Tiger athletics. The Top Ten
Moments from 2011-12 contains some individual highlights in addition to those
involving the teams. Make sure to check back each Tuesday and Thursday to see
what moments made it.
In a season
of firsts, Dec. 3, 2011 proved to be another first for the Tiger football team.
This is the No. 6 moment on the Top Ten Moments from the 2011-12 school year.
After
capturing their first Colonial Athletic Association championship, the Tigers
became the first football team in NCAA history to compete for an NCAA football
championship at the Division III, Division II and FCS levels.
Excitement
built for the Tigers' first playoff appearance since 1985 quickly. By Monday of
that week, the Tigers had already sold out the gold chair back section of the
stadium. Tickets continued to sell quickly and before the game started on
Saturday, Towson
had a sell-out on its hands.
The last time any sporting
event sold out at Towson University was on November 24, 1997 when Towson hosted the University of Michigan
in a men's basketball game. Tickets were still being sold on the day of the
game before it was declared a sellout and a total of 5,086 fans viewed the game
in the Towson Center Arena.
Towson football's sellout marks the
largest crowd to attend a college football game in Johnny Unitas® Stadium history.
The previous record was set on Sept. 22, 2007 when the Tigers played host to Delaware.
A crowd of 11,196 saw a
back-and-forth game dominated by two potent offenses. A safety by junior
defensive lineman Tom Bianchi
of Lehigh with 5:14 remaining in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference
as the No. 6 Mountain Hawks (11-1) came from behind to edge No. 8 Towson
University (9-3), 40-38.
While the season may have
ended a little sooner than the Tigers and their faithful would have liked, the
sell-out crowd was part of an energizing season of firsts.
Check back on June 28th
for the No. 5 moment in the Tiger countdown.
