Casper Wells Breaks Up Chen's Perfect Game In 7th

SEATTLE, Wash. - For the second consecutive game, former Tiger All-American outfielder Casper Wells came up with a huge hit against the Baltimore Orioles.

One night after his three-run double lifted Seattle to a 6-3 victory over Baltimore, Casper kept Orioles' lefthander Wei-Yin Chen from making baseball history.

Chen entered the seventh inning with a 4-0 lead and a perfect game. Through six innings, Chen retired 18 batters in a row. He opened the seventh inning by striking out Ichiro Suzuki, his ninth strikeout of the game.

Casper, who had robbed Adam Jones of an extra-base hit with a sliding catch in the second inning, ran the count to 3-and-2 against Chen. Then, Casper lined a 92-mile per hour fastball well over the left field fence, cutting Seattle's deficit to 4-1.

In the eighth inning, he was hit by a pitch to load the bases as part of the Mariners' three-run rally that tied the game.

However, the Orioles pulled out a 5-4 victory when Robert Andino homered in the ninth inning.

Seattle and Baltimore close out their three-game series on Wednesday at Safeco Field.
