Since Towson men's basketball head coach Pat Skerry took over the Tigers’ program just over a year ago, he has brought in a number of new players. One thing is certain though; none of his acquisitions have been bigger - literally - than 6-foot-9, 245-pound power forward Bilal Dixon.

After playing in 94 games, including 68 starts, for Providence College from 2009-12, Dixon decided to spend his final season at Towson University. He will be eligible to play immediately for the Tigers after graduating from Providence. Thus far, he's ecstatic about his decision to join the Tigers.

"I love it," said Dixon. "I love the team and love the vibe we already have. It's amazing how we have all bonded already considering there are so many freshmen and new additions. We're just all on the same page."

Dixon was named to The Sporting News BIG EAST All-Freshman Team in 2010 after averaging 8.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game while starting 30 of 31 games for the Friars. He realizes his role as a Tiger is a lot bigger than just his production on the court. As one of only very few upperclassmen on the squad, the coaching staff is relying on Dixon to help the younger guys out, especially the players at his position.

"If you look at the young bigs we have, (Jamel) Flash, (Barrington) Alston and (Timajh) Parker, we have some good pieces," explained Dixon. "Jerrelle (Benimon) and I are the older guys and we have to be there for them to get them better because they are the future.

"We don't have many upperclassmen on this team so even though I'm new, I consider myself the big brother," said Dixon. "I have to show them the right way. I have to be a leader because I'm a senior and I've been around the block. I just try to teach them so that they stay out of trouble and they keep their books right. That's first and foremost. Then I can help them on the court as the year goes on."

Dixon was well aware of Towson's win-loss record last season, but he's excited to be a part of the solution.

"Everyone has to realize that we had a bad season last year, but we have to move on from that," said Dixon. "At the same time though, we also have to make sure that we don't go back to that. Coach Skerry wants us working hard and to use last year as motivation."

The most impressive thing that can be taken from that statement is that he referred to last year’s team as "we". Although Dixon was not a part of the 2011-12 team, in just a few short weeks he has already become a full-fledged Tiger. He looks at last year’s record, but then sees a number of solutions on the court with all of the additions made to this year’s squad.

As one of the key additions, Dixon is striving to improve his game each and every day.

"I'm literally working on everything," explained Dixon. "I'm improving my free throws, my hook shot, my jump shot and my dribbling. I'm just working on all aspects of my game."

Dixon was quick to credit all of his teammates for the amount of hard work they are all putting in. He can see the effort on the court during a short practice and feel safe in believing this team will improve vastly next year and for the years to come.

"Everyone wants to win and we know there's no place to go but up," said Dixon. "We can't wait for the season to come. We have a lot of key pieces. We have really good scorers and I'm just excited to show the world what all we can do!”
