TOWSON, Md. – For Coach Rob Ambrose of Towson University, the Tigers' second scrimmage of the pre-season was mostly about situational work. The Tigers scrimmaged for about 90 minutes and ran about 88 plays.

Many of the 88 plays were goal line situations, kickoffs, punts and running plays from deep in their own territory.

“The best thing about today is that we got lots of stuff on film,” he says. “We got to see how certain individuals respond in different situations. Now, we have plenty to learn from and plenty to teach from.”

He added, “For me, a scrimmage like this is a 'no-win' situation. Our offense turned the ball over four times. That's bad. But, the defense forced four turnovers and that's great.”

Senior quarterback Grant Enders had a solid performance for the Tigers. He completed 12 of 20 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns.

On the opening drive of the scrimmage, quarterback Enders moved the team with a very efficient drive. After completing a 15-yard pass to Tom Ryan, he scrambled for 24 yards to the other 31-yard line. Passes to Clayton Minott and James Oboh moved the ball to the one-yard where the drive stalled.

Enders teamed up with senior wide receiver Erron Banks on a 52-yard touchdown play on the fourth series of the scrimmage. He hit Banks on a crossing pattern at the other 35-yard line and Banks outran two defenders to the end zone for the first TD of the scrimmage.

On his next drive, Enders led the Tigers on 63-yard, nine-play drive for the second touchdown of the scrimmage. His 17-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Spencer Wilkins produced another TD. On that drive, Banks caught two more passes for 29 yards. In the scrimmage, he caught three passes for 81 yards.

“Erron had some very nice plays today,” said Ambrose. “He is a very crafty veteran and he knows the system. Erron has been working very hard this summer and he made the most of his opportunity today. It always gratifies me when someone gets positive production for his efforts.”

Sophomore Derrick Joseph, a second team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection as a kick returner last year, provided a special teams highlight when he had a 49-yard punt return for a touchdown.

A pair of newcomers, cornerback Jordan Love and linebacker Telvion Clark, were among the top defensive performers in the scrimmage. A transfer from Georgia, Love broke up two passes, including a deflection of a pass from Enders to Ryan that looked like it was going to be a touchdown. Clark, a transfer from Virginia Tech, made a number of tackles from his outside linebacker spot.

In the scrimmage, there were a number of players on the sidelines, nursing all types of injuries. That presented a number of newcomers with opportunities to impress the coaching staff.

With 12 days remaining until their season opener at Kent State, Coach Ambrose admitted that he was pleased with one aspect of the scrimmage.

“We aren't making as many mental mistakes as we were earlier in the pre-season,” he said. “We still have a lot of work to do but we'll be ready.”

On Monday, the Tigers return to their pre-season schedule with two practice sessions.
