Emmitsburg, Md. - Freshman forward Hollie Garber scored her first career goal and sophomore goalkeeper Erin Quinn made a career-high eight saves, but Towson (0-3-0) fell behind early en route to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Mount St. Mary's (1-0-0) on Friday evening at Waldron Family Stadium.
"We got behind early again," said Head Coach Greg Paynter. "But we played with intensity and focus in the second half, and the players recognized how hard they are going to need to work this season to be competitive."
Quinn's save total tonight eclipses her previous personal best of seven in the 2011 season finale against George Mason, a 2-0 loss in Fairfax, Va. The Mount outshot Towson 16-7, but the teams split the corners, 3-3.
In the eighth minute, Quinn made a point-blank save to keep Mount St. Mary's off the board, but nine minutes later, the Mount's Ragan Cote lifted a hopeful shot that appeared to bounce over Quinn's head and was put into the net by Kelly Baker. Mount St. Mary's second goal game at 25:22 when Alicia Mirando scored with an assist by Julia DiGiacomo. Play went back and forth until 37:57 when Nadine Goerke sent the ball forward to Cote who went one-on-one with Quinn and scored to put the Mount up 3-0 at the half.
The action went back and forth for most of the second half. Quinn made a diving save to her left in the 66th minute; Mount St. Mary's was unable to make anything from the resulting corner kick. Towson was able to begin applying offensive pressure but couldn't sustain possession. Mount St. Mary's went up 4-0 when Goerke slipped a ball through the Towson defense to Baker at 79:56.
Garber scored for the Tigers with less than a minute left. Sophomore Rhianna Zalewski worked the ball down the right side before passing it to the middle to a waiting Garber. She lofted a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and into the net with 49 seconds left.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday, August 31 when they travel up Charles Street to face Loyola (Md.) at 8 p.m.
