The
Towson Tiger football team lost to Kent State Thursday night by a score
of 41-21. If you are a fan of the Tigers, you already know that. You
can't win football games when you turn the ball over six times especially when
your opponent doesn't turn it over once.
But that game has been covered
extensively here on TowsonTigers.com. I thought I would give you a glimpse of what goes on during a Tiger road trip.
The
team and staff gathered at the Unitas Stadium field house at
noon on Wednesday. Out of the four team buses, my broadcast
partner Ron Meehan and I were assigned to bus #3. Ron has had a very
tough time adjusting to the fact that he is on bus #3 as a broadcaster.
As a Hall of Fame player at Towson, and as an assistant coach at
Towson, he always road bus #1. During the course of the two-day trip, I reminded him at least a dozen times that he is no longer a bus #1 guy.
With any Towson football trip, you know things will run like
clockwork because Jon Dahlquist is in charge. The Tigers' director of
football operations is the best in the country, and that is not an
exaggeration. We headed from Towson to BWI for our charter flight to
Ohio.
We left the airport and took the short trip to Dix Stadium.
From what I can gather, the stadium is not really close to the main
campus. Dix Stadium seats a little over 20 thousand. Its not a bad
venue, but there is really nothing that stands out either.
A
truck had left Towson on Tuesday, carrying all the football equipment
and the players' and staff's luggage. That way, you don't have to check
in any baggage and have an easy time on and off of the airplanes. We then
headed to Cuyahoga Falls, which is where the team hotel was.
After settling in, the team dinner took place at 6:30 p.m. Following
dinner, the team broke into offense and defense for their final
meetings. Ron and I attended the offensive meeting, run by
assistant Jared Ambrose. The point of a meeting like this is to basically go over all the defenses that
the opponent could run. For those of us who are fans, sitting in
that meeting the great Jim Mora's quote to the media from years ago kept
going through my head - "You think you know, but you don't know, and
you never will." Sit through a football team meeting, and that will make
sense.
The following day, the team got an early breakfast, and
then some time to relax before their afternoon team meal. As head
coach Rob Ambrose told me at breakfast, night road games are the worst
because there is too much sitting around waiting for the game.
Damon Lewis, Zach Maskavich and I did not have that problem. We left
around 1:30 p.m. and headed to Dix Stadium. With our switch from radio to TowsonTigers.com, we have all new equipment, and
this was our maiden voyage. After about two hours of testing, we were
ready to go. Unfortunately it was only 4 p.m., and game time was 7 p.m.
I met with the Kent State SID to go over player pronunciations, and
then with the Kent State radio people. We both kind of grilled each
other on our respective teams. It's always good to get the opponents'
point of view.
After the game, it was a quick getaway back to the
airport. We took off a little after midnight, and landed at BWI a
little after one. The buses were waiting, and we got back to Unitas Stadium around a quarter to two in the morning. Players had class the
next day, and staff members had to be at work.
Don't forget to join me and Damon Lewis this
Thursday from Bill Bateman's in Towson for Tiger Talk. We will be
joined by head football coach Rob Ambrose and another Tiger head coach.
The show starts at 6 p.m. If you can't make it out to Bateman's, you can hear Tiger Talk right here on TowsonTigers.com.
